Description:

Remote Sensing Technician (RST) primary duties are for field data collection of remote sensing data. The RST will work with technologies such as hydrography, UAS aerial surveying (drone), and/or other remote sensing equipment and projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works alongside a team performing aerial, land, and hydrographic surveying with remote sensing technologies.
  • Assists with hydrographic and marine survey planning, field data collection, and data processing.
  • Assists with remote aircraft operations with planning and clearance to airspace to flight operations and collection of LiDAR, photogrammetry, video.
  • Sets up, operates, and troubleshoots surveying system hardware, computers, and software.
  • Prepare field service reports, maintain equipment logs, prepare written communication for clients and other team members.
  • Collects hydrographic data using HYPACK and other software.
  • Works aboard various boats from skiffs, airboats, 18-30' work boats.
  • Develops and follows plans, specifications, procedures and promotes safe work practices.
  • Perform shop tasks including the repair, cleaning, and preparation of remote sensing equipment.
  • Candidate will be expected to develop skills and advance in growing technologies.
Key Tasks:
  • Setup, maintain, and collect remote sensing data collection systems to corroborate remote sensing data analyses.
  • Direct and manage field survey activities and operations.
  • Analyze data obtained from remote sensing systems to obtain meaningful results and/or at least to the QA/QC stage.
  • Monitor quality of remote sensing data collection operations to determine if procedural or equipment changes are necessary.
  • Record data log keeping (of survey research, operations, weather, etc.) for scientific or technical use.
  • Design or implement strategies for collection, analysis, or display of geographic data.
  • Recommend new remote sensing hardware or software acquisitions.
  • Direct installation or testing of new remote sensing hardware or software.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, computer-based, or related field preferred (but not required).
  • 2-5 years' experience in related field and/or military experience.
  • Proficiency with HYPACK, Chesapeake, EdgeTech and/or other related surveying software packages.
  • Knowledge and experience with geodesy, hydrography, GIS, photogrammetry, charting, cartography, tidal datums, and survey control.
  • Equipment experience should include some familiarity with single-beam and multi-beam echo sounders, side scan sonar, GPS-navigation systems, robotic total stations and remote aircraft.
  • Experience and/or strong interest of working in a marine environment (navigating small boats, etc.)
  • Experience with radio-controlled UAS (drones).
  • Experience processing and interpreting field datasets at least to the QA/QC stage.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, conduct fieldwork in variety of weather conditions and terrain.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills with the ability to produce accurate reports.
  • Background screening which may include, but is not limited to: employment verification, driving record check, criminal background.
  • Flexibility to frequent regional travel, sometimes required to remain on prolonged projects out of state.

MPH will look favorably on candidates with any of the following certifications: FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot, ACSM Hydrographer, and/or Intern or License in Land Surveying or Professional Engineering.
