Job description

Incentive Potential: Performance-based bonus opportunity of up to 100% of base salary

Position Summary

A nationwide financial institution is seeking an accomplished Business Development Officer to originate and develop Small Business Administration lending and other commercial financing opportunities across the United States.

This is a production-focused role for an established financial-services sales professional with strong SBA lending experience, commercial credit knowledge, and a proven referral network. The selected candidate will manage the business-development process from initial prospecting and financial evaluation through credit presentation, commitment, and transaction funding.

The ideal candidate has consistently generated at least $20 million in annual loan production during each of the past three years and can independently build a qualified pipeline of small-business financing opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Originate SBA loans, equipment-leasing transactions, and asset-based lending financing for small businesses nationwide.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with small-business owners, brokers, referral partners, professional advisers, and other sources of commercial lending opportunities.
  • Generate qualified leads through networking, referrals, direct outreach, relationship development, and market intelligence.
  • Expand the organization’s presence and market penetration within assigned territories and industry segments.
  • Clearly communicate the institution’s lending capabilities and financing solutions to prospective borrowers and referral partners.
  • Develop marketing and sales strategies in collaboration with executive leadership and the marketing team.
  • Assess prospective transactions and identify appropriate SBA or commercial financing structures.
  • Obtain complete financing applications, supporting financial records, and required borrower documentation.
  • Prepare and submit complete loan packages for underwriting review.
  • Present proposed loan transactions and credit recommendations to the Credit Committee when required.
  • Evaluate business financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, collateral, repayment capacity, and other relevant credit factors.
  • Recognize viable credit opportunities and recommend funding solutions aligned with borrower needs and lending requirements.
  • Secure customer-signed commitments following loan approval.
  • Coordinate with underwriting, credit, closing, and operations teams to move approved transactions efficiently toward funding.
  • Maintain accurate pipeline, relationship, and activity records in Salesforce and other loan-origination systems.
  • Monitor deal progress, resolve documentation issues, and maintain consistent communication with borrowers and internal stakeholders.
  • Meet or exceed established annual loan-production, revenue, pipeline, and relationship-development goals.
  • Remain current on SBA lending requirements, commercial credit practices, competitive market conditions, and relevant regulatory developments

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, marketing, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant professional experience.
  • At least five years of successful sales or business-development experience within banking, commercial lending, SBA lending, equipment finance, asset-based lending, or a closely related financial-services field.
  • Strong, recent SBA lending and loan-origination experience.
  • Documented annual production of at least $20 million during each of the previous three years.
  • Demonstrated ability to originate, develop, and close commercial financing transactions.
  • Strong understanding of SBA loan programs, eligibility requirements, underwriting considerations, loan structuring, and documentation.
  • Ability to analyze business and personal financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, collateral, debt-service capacity, and credit risk.
  • Strong commercial lending, credit-analysis, marketing, and risk-management skills.
  • Proven success serving the financing needs of small-business owners.
  • Excellent consultative selling, negotiation, presentation, and relationship-management abilities.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple transactions, deadlines, borrower relationships, and internal approval processes simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or comparable customer-relationship and loan-origination platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and remain accountable for production goals in a remote environment.
  • Ability to travel for borrower meetings, networking activities, industry events, and transaction-related needs when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An active and established network of brokers, accountants, attorneys, commercial real estate professionals, financial advisers, business intermediaries, and other referral sources.
  • Experience originating equipment-leasing or asset-based lending transactions in addition to SBA loans.
  • Experience presenting commercial credit opportunities to senior credit officers or a formal Credit Committee.
  • Nationwide lending experience or a demonstrated ability to develop business across multiple markets.

Compensation

The position offers a base salary of $90,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, production history, and market. The successful candidate may also earn a performance-based incentive of up to 100% of base salary, subject to applicable production goals and the organization’s incentive-compensation plan.

Applicants should be prepared to provide verifiable information regarding their loan-production history during the interview process.

Work Location

This is a full-time remote position that may be based in an approved location within the United States. Occasional business travel may be required.
