What is a religious program specialist?

Religious Program Specialists (RPs) are enlisted members of the U.S. Navy who assist chaplains in supporting the religious needs and spiritual well-being of service members and their families. They help coordinate religious services, manage religious facilities, and provide administrative support for chaplain-led programs. RPs also facilitate the delivery of religious materials and ensure the free exercise of religion for all personnel, regardless of faith group.

What are the typical responsibilities of a religious program specialist?

Religious Program Specialists (RPS) play a crucial role in supporting chaplains by organizing and coordinating religious services, managing religious facilities and supplies, and handling administrative duties such as scheduling, record-keeping, and communications. They often assist with event planning, facilitate access to religious resources, and ensure the confidentiality and security of sensitive information. RPSs work closely with chaplains and service members of all faiths, requiring strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Their work environment is typically collaborative, and they may be stationed on bases, ships, or in field environments, offering a dynamic and meaningful role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a religious program specialist?

To thrive as a Religious Program Specialist, you need knowledge of religious support operations, strong organizational skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent.
