What is a release engineer?

A release engineer delivers computer application source code into functioning software components. They are specialized software engineers that focus on the transition from code development to production software implementation. Job duties for a release engineer include ensuring that computer source code compiles correctly, moving it through the version control process, and implementing the completed software programs into the production environment. Qualifications for these technician roles include computer science skills and experience with software coding languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a release engineer?

To thrive as a Release Engineer, you need expertise in software development lifecycle processes, version control systems, and scripting languages, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with deployment automation tools (like Jenkins, Git, Docker, or Kubernetes) and experience with CI/CD pipelines are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you coordinate releases and resolve issues efficiently. These skills ensure smooth, reliable software releases and collaboration across development, QA, and operations teams.

What are some common challenges faced by release engineers during software deployment cycles?

Release Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple development and operations teams, managing tight deadlines for software releases, and ensuring compatibility across different environments. Handling unexpected build failures or last-minute bug fixes can also add pressure, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Effective communication and robust automation are key strategies for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth, predictable releases.

What is the difference between Release Engineer vs Build Engineer?

AspectRelease EngineerBuild Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires experience with CI/CD tools, scripting, and version controlRequires knowledge of build tools, scripting, and version control
Work EnvironmentWorks closely with development, QA, and operations teams to manage releasesFocuses on automating and managing build processes within development teams
Industry UsageCommon in software development, DevOps, and IT industriesCommon in software development, especially in continuous integration environments

While both roles involve automation and scripting, Release Engineers primarily oversee the deployment and release process, ensuring smooth delivery of software. Build Engineers focus on creating and maintaining the build systems that compile and prepare code for testing and release. Understanding these distinctions helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for each stage of software delivery.

How much do release engineers make?

Release engineers typically earn a median annual salary between $80,000 and $130,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Salaries can be higher for those with expertise in automation tools, scripting, and continuous integration systems.

Job description

Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Healthcare - NYC

Directly building and deploying AI models in production healthcare settings; heavy focus on hands-on AI deployment, evaluation, and integration.

About the Role

OpenAI is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer to lead end-to-end deployment of AI models in healthcare organizations, translating clinical and operational workflows into production systems while ensuring PHI, HIPAA, and regulatory safeguards. The role combines hands-on architecture, implementation, evaluation, and customer collaboration to drive production adoption and measurable workflow impact.

Job DescriptionRole

OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team for Healthcare seeks an engineer to own end-to-end deployments of OpenAI models within healthcare organizations (payers, providers, health systems, and healthcare technology companies). The FDE will lead technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff, translating customer workflows, data, infrastructure, and regulatory constraints into production AI systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own technical solution design and delivery from discovery through production deployment and handoff.
  • Partner with customer engineers, operators, and domain experts to define scope, technical requirements, and measurable outcomes.
  • Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems that integrate with customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, EHRs, claims systems, and operational tools.
  • Build systems with safeguards for PHI, HIPAA, privacy, security, authorization, governance, auditability, and other regulated-delivery requirements.
  • Define and operationalize evaluations, validation evidence, human-review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria aligned to customer acceptance thresholds.
  • Use evaluation results, error analysis, observability, and customer feedback to improve reliability, performance, model selection, and production readiness.
  • Distill learnings into reference architectures, interoperability and integration patterns, evaluation harnesses, security controls, and reusable primitives for regulated enterprise environments.
Requirements
  • 6+ years of experience in software engineering, ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or comparable roles, with technical depth and hands‑on ownership.
  • Experience operating as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous environments.
  • Proven track record of technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff for complex customer-facing or enterprise systems.
  • Healthcare experience preferred: payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems, or interoperability standards such as Epic, HL7, and FHIR.
  • Exposure to provider or health‑system workflows (clinical operations, revenue cycle management, patient access, contact centers) or EHR/interoperability technologies (Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, MEDITECH, HL7, FHIR, HIEs).
  • Strong judgment around AI evaluation, privacy, security, governance, and reliability.
Location & Logistics
  • Role is based in New York City with a hybrid work model (3 days in the office per week).
  • Relocation assistance is offered.
  • Travel up to 50% is required.
  • Background checks will be administered as applicable.
