Job description

Position Overview:

The Associate Director is responsible for the operational performance of multiple Inspection Centers (ICs). The Associate Director will work with the Inspection Center General Managers and their teams to identify and resolve challenges to meeting IC objectives and production requirements. The Associate Director will also oversee IC teams and ensure solid staffing plans, focus on retention and ensure high associate engagement, a sense of urgency to achieve performance metrics, and a culture that reflects Carvana's values.


What you'll be doing:

Leadership

  • Demonstrate effective leadership setting a positive tone and a sense of purpose at the Inspection Center
  • Build and develop high performing team within the IC
  • Oversee plans to ensure the IC will have the capability to meet future demands
  • Ensure IC management beliefs and behaviors are in line with the Carvana culture
  • Visit the shop floor to maintain detailed awareness of the realities of each IC and a connection to its staff
  • Pursue consistent, measurable improvement of the IC
  • Lives the Carvana values

Production Management

  • Work with IC team to identify, prioritize, and solve problems impacting the Inspection Center
  • Oversee production planning for the Inspection Centers and ensure purchasing and transportation are aligned with production plans
  • Manage Inspection Center capacity to meet production targets
  • Ensure IC leadership is executing operating standards such as standardized work, operating rules, 5S, product integrations, and visual management tools
  • Monitor IC compliant with all health and safety and loss prevention guidelines

People Management

  • Collaborate with People Operations and IC leadership to build and maintain a pipeline of associates to fill current and future positions and manage churn
  • Develop a bench of candidates for IC leadership positions
  • Ensure progression path training and certification process are consistently executed
  • Model effective teamwork and ensure it's embraced at all levels of the organization
  • Provide competency-based feedback and ensure leaders throughout the organization are also providing appropriate feedback
  • Mentor and develop Inspection Center General Manager

Continuous Improvement - 10%

  • Audit continuous improvement events, ensure adequate resources are available to support events, and hold the team accountable for results
  • Challenge, participate in and lead continuous improvement efforts
  • Train and mentor managers on problem-solving and process improvement
  • Other duties as assigned.

What the job requires:

To be able to do your job at Carvana, there are some basic requirements we want to share with you.

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (no DUIs and no more than two moving violations in the last 3 years)
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience either in automotive or a lean manufacturing environment leading over 100 associates
  • Current GM at a Carvana Inspection Center or has successfully led multiple manufacturing or reconditioning work centers
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and experience applying those principles in a complex operating environment
  • Proven track record of leading and developing associates and managers
  • Proven ability to manage project deliverables and metrics against aggressive targets and timeline
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others effectively in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Ability to work with and through teams to achieve results
  • Strong analysis and decision making ability
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Requires standing for extended periods of time with frequent stretching, reaching, walking, stooping, pushing, and/or pulling in an environment that may be cold, hot, noisy, and wet and may have fumes or odors due to vehicle maintenance
  • Requires use of safety equipment that may include but not limited to face shield or goggles, non-slip shoes, gloves, mask, and other protective garments and equipment
  • Ability to work overtime and on weekends.
  • Ability to work variable schedule(s) as necessary.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds independently; majority of lifting from knee to shoulder heights; other lifting required from various levels
  • Walk up to three miles each day
