Job Summary


  • Provide direct support to Refugee students and their families in Granite School District.
  • Build communities by working with schools to identify and engage refugee youth, ages 5-22 years old, at risk of drop out, in earning a diploma, GED, and/or vocational certificate.
  • Will work with DWS, Job Corps, SLCC, Refugee Education Center, and Universities to help assist youth with opportunities to further education/job training.
  • Responsible for supplementing educational needs for refugee students.


Essential Functions

  • Assist students in the Tumaini on the Go program, during the school year and the summer program
  • Assess and document current students, and up to age 22: progress with academic development, independent living skills development and adjustment to culture.
  • Complete monthly in-school/center visits with students to review: grades, attendance, citizenship ratings and to address any needs or concerns.
  • Complete quarterly home visits to review and assess progress and barriers to students' progress.
  • Teach parents about their right to advocate for their child's needs with relation to IEP's, 504's, and other necessary accommodations.
  • Attend and participate in student IEP and/or 504 meetings.
  • Attend and participate in SST and MTSS meetings.
  • Collaborate with academic coaches, tutors, schools, and community partners to aid the student in completing high school diploma and post-secondary education/training.
  • Assist students academically through small group support, learning plans, connecting with school staff for support, etc.
  • Initiate and run the Student Ambassador Program in our High Schools - coordinate meetings, implement processes, promote enrollment, and support.
  • Complete social assessments with youth and parents.
  • Create a treatment plan with youth, family, and school.
  • Implement, review, and reassess treatment plans quarterly.
  • Teach independent living skills under the following subjects: Education, Career Planning, Housing, Financial Management, Physical and Mental Health, Transportation, Communication, and Social Relationships, Laws, Safety, and Emergency Response.
  • Make referrals to community resources including mental health supports.
  • Maintain a database of barriers and identify impactful practices and supports for each participant, documenting interactions and action steps for support.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with refugee agencies.

Non-Essential Functions

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent public relation and organizational skills, including computer skills.
  • Ability to work with school administrators.
  • Public presentations skills preferred.
  • Must have a working knowledge of all levels of the school system and requirements for student entry and exit.
  • Ability to work with at-risk students.
  • Ability to work with refugee students and families.
  • Bilingual preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Must have own transportation
  • Bilingual preferred

Interacts positively with students, parents, teachers, counselors, principals, refugee agencies, and other district personnel.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and/or hear.  Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, and crouch.  Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must be able to stand/stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
