What does a records management consultant do?

A Records Management Consultant helps organizations develop and implement systems for managing their records and information efficiently. They assess current recordkeeping practices, ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and recommend improvements to processes and technologies. Their work often includes creating retention schedules, advising on digital transformation, training staff, and supporting data security and privacy initiatives. The goal is to enhance productivity, reduce risks, and ensure information is organized and accessible when needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a records management consultant?

To thrive as a Records Management Consultant, you need expertise in information governance, regulatory compliance, and document lifecycle management, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification such as CRM (Certified Records Manager). Familiarity with electronic records management systems (ERMS), data privacy regulations, and digital archiving tools is essential.
