Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. (VTF) is a nonstock corporation established in 1948 for the sole purpose of managing the endowment and real estate portfolio of Virginia Tech, now valued at $3.4 billion. VTF exists and operates as a separate, independent entity with its own officers and governing board – managing, investing, and distributing private resources to advance Virginia Tech’s mission and its strategic priorities.



Position Summary:


Reporting to the Chief Real Estate and Commercial Development Officer, the Director, Facilities & Real Estate Operations serves as the operational lead of the Virginia Tech Foundation’s real estate platform, with responsibility for facilities, capital projects and construction, vendor management, operational performance, and property management, maintenance, and operational systems.

This role establishes clear standards, accountability, and ownership across the platform while driving improved execution, cost discipline, and operational efficiency across both internally managed and third-party managed assets.


Key Responsibilities:


Operations & Facilities Leadership

  • Lead day-to-day real estate operations across the VTF real estate platform
  • Oversee facilities, engineering, and maintenance performance across all assets
  • Establish and enforce consistent operational standards across properties

Capital Projects, Construction & Maintenance Oversight

  • Oversee execution of capital projects, construction activity, and major repairs across the portfolio
  • Manage contractors, service vendors, and project delivery to ensure quality, cost discipline, and timely completion
  • Coordinate capital planning and prioritization of maintenance and project needs across assets

Vendor & Contract Management

  • Oversee vendor relationships, service contracts, and renewals across the portfolio
  • Manage vendor performance, scope, and accountability to ensure consistent service delivery
  • Partner with Legal on contract structuring and execution

Third-Party Property Management Oversight

  • Oversee performance of third-party property managers across the portfolio
  • Ensure consistency in reporting, service levels, and operating standards

Systems, Maintenance Platform & Data Oversight

  • Provide oversight of property management and maintenance systems used across the portfolio
  • Ensure reporting accuracy, consistency, and usability across systems
  • Drive improvements in workflows and operational processes

Organizational Leadership

  • Lead and manage internal operations team and functions
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability
  • Evaluate team structure and staffing needs over time

Qualifications

Required

  • Significant experience in real estate operations, facilities, property management, or related operational roles
  • Experience managing vendors, service contracts, contractors, and property operations

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in real estate, engineering, business, or related field
  • Experience in institutional or portfolio ownership environments
  • Experience with building systems, facilities operations, and maintenance planning
  • Familiarity with property or maintenance management systems
  • Experience supporting laboratory, research, or life sciences facilities
