How much do protein crystallography jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for protein crystallography in the United States is $37.89, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.00 and $47.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Protein Crystallography job?

A Protein Crystallography job involves determining the 3D structures of proteins using X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy. Scientists in this role grow protein crystals, collect diffraction data, and analyze molecular structures to understand protein function. These insights are critical for drug design, enzyme engineering, and fundamental biological research. Positions are typically found in academia, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology companies. Strong skills in structural biology, biochemistry, and computational modeling are often required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Protein Crystallography position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Protein Crystallography, you need expertise in molecular biology, protein purification, crystallization techniques, and structural biology, typically supported by an advanced degree in biochemistry or a related field. Familiarity with X-ray diffraction equipment, data analysis software (such as CCP4, Phenix, or Coot), and lab management systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong collaboration skills are key soft skills for effective research and teamwork. These competencies ensure accurate structural analysis, smooth laboratory operations, and valuable contributions to scientific discovery.

What are the main challenges faced in a Protein Crystallography role, and how can they be addressed?

One of the primary challenges in Protein Crystallography is obtaining high-quality protein crystals, as this process often requires extensive optimization and troubleshooting. Additionally, interpreting diffraction data and solving complex protein structures can be time-consuming and may involve overcoming technical hurdles. Collaborating closely with colleagues in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and computational chemistry is essential for success. Staying persistent and adaptable, and seeking mentorship from experienced team members, can help navigate these challenges and lead to successful outcomes in structural biology projects.

Job description

Role: Scientist, Computational Protein Design

Adimab is the leading technology provider for therapeutic antibody drug discovery, focusing solely on our partnerships without pursuing an internal product pipeline. Since 2009, we have partnered with over 140 pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, generating more than 650 therapeutic programs, of which more than 85 have entered clinical trials.ย ย

Role Overviewย
The role is on Adimab's computational biology team in Mountain View, CA.ย Data-driven approachesย have been central to the development of the Adimab platform, and the team is activelyย utilizingย and developing modern de novo protein design and generative AI methods to extend its capabilities.ย You will serve as the computational lead for protein design campaigns, embedded within a world-class team of modeling and wet-bench scientists, with direct access to Adimab's industry-leading experimental capabilities to drive the design-build-test cycle.ย ย

Responsibilitiesย

  • Take end-to-end ownership of computational protein design campaigns โ€” from design generation through wet-lab collaboration, analysis ofย experimentalย data, and optimization of the design-build-test cycle. Applications span de novo epitope-targeted IgG, VHH, andย minibinderย design, as well as protein solubilization and stabilization.ย
  • Partner with wet-lab teams to design experiments that generate custom training data for affinity,ย epitope, andย specificityย prediction models. Train and rigorously benchmark resulting models against internal and external baselines.ย
  • Build andย maintainย theย computational infrastructureย supporting both protein design campaigns and model development,ย including reproducible pipelines and integration of computational outputs with wet-lab data.ย
  • Track developments in computational protein design and ML; evaluate relevance to Adimab's platform and identify opportunities for integration.ย
  • Serve as a resource for wet-lab scientists on AI/ML capabilities and best practices, helping antibody and protein engineering teams apply computational design methods.ย

Needed Upon Hireย

  • PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Computational Biology, orย a related field.ย
  • 2โ€“4 years of post-PhD experience specifically in computational protein or binder design.ย
  • Strong foundationย in the analysis of structural and energetic factors driving protein-protein interactions.ย
  • Proficiencyย with structure prediction and generative design tools such asย RFAntibody,ย BindCraft, andย Protenix. Crystallography or cryo-EM experience is a plus.ย
  • Strong Python skills and experience building reproducible analysis and modeling pipelines.ย
  • Provenย track recordย of publication or patent contribution in applied ML for proteins or computational design.ย
Pay Range: $156,800 - $165,760 base salary andย eligibility for 15% bonus

Come join us!ย

Our integrated antibody discovery and engineering platform provides unprecedented speed from antigen to purified, full-length human IgGs with exquisite specificity and biophysical behavior. We offerย fundamental advantages by delivering diverse panels of antibodies that meet the most demanding standards for affinity, epitope specificity, species cross-reactivity, and developability. We enable our partners to rapidly expand their biologics pipelines through a broad spectrum of technology access arrangements.
