What is a postdoctoral molecular biology?

A Postdoctoral Molecular Biology job is a temporary research position for individuals who have recently earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field. It involves conducting advanced research, designing and performing experiments, analyzing data, and publishing findings in scientific journals. Postdocs often work under the guidance of a principal investigator (PI) and contribute to ongoing research projects while developing independent research skills. These positions help scientists gain experience, build their professional network, and prepare for careers in academia, industry, or government research.

What does a postdoctoral molecular biology do?

Postdoctoral Molecular Biology researchers typically design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and contribute to scientific publications and grant proposals. Their daily activities may involve running assays like PCR or Western blotting, maintaining cell cultures, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. They also participate in lab meetings, mentor junior staff or students, and stay current with scientific literature to inform their research. This dynamic role offers frequent opportunities to learn new techniques and work on innovative projects within an academic or industry lab setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in postdoctoral molecular biology?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Molecular Biology researcher, you need a Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field, strong experimental design skills, and experience with molecular techniques such as PCR, cloning, and sequencing. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools, laboratory management software, and the ability to troubleshoot advanced equipment is often required. Job description

Postdoctoral Associate | Cell and Molecular Biology

Hinson Lab

Farmington, CT

The Hinson lab is seeking an independent, highly motivated PhD-level scientist to join our trans-continental collaborative group funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP). The overarching goal of this project is to leverage human pluripotent stem cell technology and advanced structural biology methods to define mechanisms and rules of sarcomere assembly and function. The ideal candidate would have a strong background in cell and molecular biology particularly in stem cell differentiation, advanced imaging and protein-protein interaction studies. As part of the group, this talented individual would have access to a world-class consortium of scientists across pluripotent stem cell biology, 3-dimensional organoids/microtissue assays, super resolution microscopy, and structural biology.

The Hinson lab at the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine and UConn Health utilizes pluripotent stem cell biology, tissue engineering, genome editing, and multi-omics assays to study mechanisms of inherited heart failure and other muscle disorders.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or related field of study.
  • Prior research experience in at least two of the following areas: pluripotent stem cell biology and differentiation, advanced microscopy, genome editing, and proteomics.
  • Candidates should have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, able to work independently and effectively with other members in a productive team across continents.
  • Experience with R, Python or similar statistical package is helpful, as well as experience with proteomics data analyses and bioinformatics.

**Please submit your current CV, at least 2 letters of reference, and 1-page (maximum) statement of Research Interests and Career Goals at time of application.
