What is a Cryo-ET Postdoctoral Position?

A Cryo-ET (Cryo-Electron Tomography) Postdoctoral Position is a research role for scientists who have recently completed their PhD and want to specialize in cryo-electron tomography. This technique allows researchers to visualize the three-dimensional structure of cells and macromolecular complexes at near-atomic resolution in their native state. Postdocs in this field work on developing, optimizing, and applying cryo-ET methods to study biological samples, often contributing to breakthroughs in structural biology and cell biology. The position typically involves both experimental and computational work, including sample preparation, data collection, image processing, and analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cryo-ET Postdoctoral Researcher, and why are they important?

To excel as a Cryo-ET Postdoctoral Researcher, you typically need a PhD in structural biology, biophysics, or a related field, with a strong background in electron microscopy and sample preparation. Proficiency in cryo-electron tomography (Cryo-ET) instrumentation, image processing software (such as RELION, IMOD, or Dynamo), and data analysis tools is crucial. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective scientific communication skills set top candidates apart. These capabilities are essential for producing high-quality structural data and successfully advancing research projects in a collaborative laboratory environment.

What are some typical challenges faced when starting a Cryo-EM postdoctoral position, and how can new hires overcome them?

New postdocs in Cryo-EM often encounter challenges such as mastering complex instrumentation, optimizing sample preparation protocols, and interpreting intricate datasets. Adapting to the fast-evolving software and staying current with best practices can also be demanding. To overcome these, it's helpful to actively seek mentorship within the lab, participate in training workshops, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary team members. Engaging with the broader Cryo-EM community through seminars and conferences can further accelerate your learning and integration into the field.

Job description

Cryo-Electron Tomography (Cryo-ET) Scientist
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research seeks a Cryo-Electron Tomography (cryo-ET) scientist to support and expand our growing in situ structural biology and integrative imaging efforts. This senior-level position within the Technology Center will play an active role in developing and executing cryo-ET projects, enabling visualization and structural interpretation of molecular assemblies directly within cells and tissues.
Working closely with Stowers investigators, the successful candidate will lead collaborative cryo-ET projects across diverse biological systems. This is a highly hands-on position focused on advancing workflows from sample preparation and data collection through analysis and structural interpretation, while contributing to the Institute's strategic expansion into cryo-ET and integrative structural biology.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute cryo-ET projects in collaboration with investigators and technology center scientists.
  • Develop and optimize workflows for in situ cryo-ET, including sample preparation, tilt-series acquisition, tomographic reconstruction, and subtomogram averaging.
  • Contribute to integrative structural workflows combining cryo-ET with complementary approaches such as AlphaFold-based structural prediction, crosslinking mass spectrometry (XL-MS), and molecular simulations or integrative modeling.
  • Provide scientific guidance and training to researchers using cryo-ET approaches.
  • Maintain strong communication across multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Travel to collaborating facilities for cryo workflow and/or data acquisition is required for this position.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in structural biology, biophysics, cell biology, biochemistry, or related field; postdoctoral experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in cryo-EM, with demonstrated expertise in cryo-ET workflows.
  • Experience with cryo-ET data processing software and analysis pipelines.
  • Strong organizational and collaborative skills with experience working on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Preferred but not required: experience or interest in integrative structural biology approaches such as AI based structural prediction, and/or molecular simulations.

To Apply
Please submit a current CV and cover letter that includes your research experience as well as a short summary of interests to careers@stowers.org or to Administration Department, Stowers Institute for Medical Research, 1000 E 50th Street, Kansas City, MO 64110.
