Introduction:

If so, you might be the perfect fit for our Water Resource Project Engineer role. 

Position Summary:   

AWPM is seeking a Project Engineer based in the State of Alabama to support ongoing and upcoming work in Birmingham, Alabama. In this role, you will provide engineering services with a strong focus on civil infrastructure and water systems, contributing technical expertise across planning, design, permitting, and project execution.

This position requires a Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure and involves close collaboration with both internal teams and external clients to define, manage, and deliver project scope. You will be responsible for setting and managing client expectations, developing detailed project plans, identifying risks, and communicating project requirements to ensure successful delivery.

Beyond project execution, the Project Engineer will play an active role in client relationship management, working to strengthen partnerships with existing clients while cultivating new opportunities. You will also support business development, marketing, and branding efforts to advance AWPM’s presence in the market and contribute to strategic growth initiatives.

 Essential functions:    

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:   

  • Lead a team of junior engineers, designers, and technicians by providing technical direction, performance feedback, and ongoing coaching.
  •  Provide engineering services focused on civil infrastructure and water systems, including water, wastewater, and stormwater projects.
  • Create advanced engineering designs for water, wastewater, and stormwater systems using Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling tools.
    • Open Roads knowledge is preferred as well
  • Conduct comprehensive design reviews, quality checks, and value-engineering assessments to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and constructability.
  • Integrate environmental, geotechnical, and structural considerations into civil design solutions and project alternatives.
  • Develop and manage project scope, ensuring alignment with client goals, regulatory requirements, and internal quality standards.
  • Establish, monitor, and manage project plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate project risks, issues, and mitigation strategies to internal team and clients.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports, design documents, presentations, and proposals.
  • Facilitate internal coordination meetings to align engineering, construction, and field staff around project goals and design requirements.
  • Conduct fieldwork and site visits in support of design, permitting, and construction-phase services.
  • Support market positioning by participating in business development, branding, and client outreach activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing clients while helping cultivate new opportunities.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and oversight to junior engineering staff as project needs require.
  • Support the development of technical strategies, including process selection, design criteria development, and project delivery methodology.
  • Ensure compliance with Professional Engineering (PE)standards and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:   

  • Education- Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferably civil engineering. 
  • Licenses- State of Alabama Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
  • Experience: 
    • 3years of relevant work experience, including project management responsibilities.
    • 5 years of relevant civil engineering experience in water resources required. 

Competencies:   

  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the organization.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Proficient with Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
  • Must be able to work in a cross-functional team environment as well as independently. 
  • Ability to solve problems and bring strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
