What is a Project Expediter?

A Project Expediter is a professional who facilitates the flow of information and resources within a project to help ensure its timely completion. Unlike a project manager, a Project Expediter typically has limited or no authority over project decisions and is mainly responsible for administrative coordination, communication, and issue tracking. They act as a liaison between team members, stakeholders, and different departments, helping to remove obstacles and ensure tasks are progressing according to schedule. This role is common in organizations with a functional or weak matrix structure, where project authority is low and centralized in functional departments. The expediter's primary goal is to keep the project moving smoothly by coordinating activities and addressing any bottlenecks.

How does a Project Expediter typically support communication and coordination within project teams?

A Project Expediter plays a crucial role in facilitating communication among project stakeholders, ensuring that information flows efficiently between team members, clients, and vendors. They help track progress, address bottlenecks, and make sure that everyone stays aligned with project timelines and requirements. Their position does not usually carry formal authority over team members, so they rely on strong organizational and interpersonal skills to keep tasks moving forward and resolve minor issues promptly.
