Job Description

The Project Engineer oversees the scheduling, planning, and technical coordination of commercial construction projects, including historic renovations, new builds, and tenant improvements. This role supports a Project Manager and works closely with onsite personnel to review site drawings and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in accordance with contract specifications. The Project Engineer serves as a key liaison between the field, office, and project stakeholders, managing contract documents and contributing to a well-organized, safety-focused construction process.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and schedule construction projects, including historic renovations, new builds, and tenant improvements, to ensure timely and efficient completion.
  • Work under the guidance of a Project Manager and collaborate with onsite personnel to review and interpret site drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Manage technical aspects of projects from start to finish, ensuring work meets required specifications, quality standards, and budget parameters.
  • Coordinate and maintain contract documents, including updating contract drawings, specifications, and related project records.
  • Prepare, track, and manage Requests for Information (RFIs), change orders, and other change management documentation.
  • Create and manage submittal packages, including preparing cover sheets, gathering product data, and coordinating shop drawings.
  • Oversee job-specific subcontractor documentation and ensure subcontractor compliance with project requirements and company standards.
  • Interact regularly with owners, project representatives, architects, and engineers to communicate project status, resolve issues, and clarify design or scope questions.
  • Utilize scheduling, project management, and estimating software to plan, track, and report on project progress.
  • Review and interpret construction schematics, blueprints, and contract documents to support field operations and ensure alignment with project plans.
  • Support the development and maintenance of construction budgets and schedules, including monitoring costs and timelines.
  • Promote and support a strong safety culture by upholding company safety standards and advocating for safe practices on jobsites.
  • Collaborate with leadership and senior-level team members to learn best practices and contribute to continuous improvement across projects.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation to support transparency, accountability, and efficient project closeout.

Essential Skills

  • 2โ€“4 years of experience as a Construction Project Engineer in commercial construction.
  • Prior field experience and hands-on understanding of construction practices and processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret contract documents, drawings, schedules, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Experience with contract management, including RFIs, submittals, and change order processes.
  • Proficiency with scheduling, project management, and estimating software.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Project or similar project scheduling tools.
  • Experience working with commercial construction plans and specifications.
  • Understanding of construction budgets, scheduling, and estimating principles.
  • Knowledge of schematic drawings and their application in construction projects.
  • Ability to stand up for company standards and safety requirements on projects.
