A successful career in Project Development requires strong project management skills, analytical abilities, and a relevant degree such as business, engineering, or construction management. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Asana), budgeting tools, and sometimes certifications like PMP or Prince2 are highly valued. Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills enable professionals to coordinate teams and drive projects forward. These competencies are crucial for ensuring projects are completed on time, within scope, and to stakeholder satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Project Development, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Project Development often encounter challenges such as aligning diverse stakeholder interests, managing shifting project requirements, and ensuring timely resource allocation. These obstacles can be addressed by maintaining clear communication channels, implementing regular project check-ins, and utilizing effective project management tools. Building strong relationships across departments and fostering a transparent team culture also help in navigating complex project landscapes and achieving successful outcomes.

What is project development?

Project development is the process of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring a specific project from an initial idea to successful completion. This involves defining project goals, creating detailed plans, securing funding, coordinating teams, and monitoring progress throughout the project lifecycle. Effective project development ensures that objectives are met on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards. Professionals in this field often work in industries such as construction, energy, technology, and nonprofit sectors.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

In project development and related fields, roles such as project coordinator, construction manager, or freelance project consultant can earn around $3,000 monthly without a formal degree, often relying on experience, certifications, or technical skills. These jobs typically require strong organizational abilities, industry knowledge, and sometimes certifications like PMP or OSHA, with work environments ranging from offices to construction sites.

What is the difference between Project Development vs Project Management?

Job description

Company
Satoshi Energy is at the forefront of energy innovation, championing the colocation of AI and bitcoin data centers with renewable energy assets. As the first mover in 2018, we have developed nearly 500 MW of data centers in ERCOT, with an additional 5 GWs of data center projects under development.
The Role
Our team brings deep expertise across electric power markets, project development, and software development, positioning us as trusted experts in this rapidly evolving market. We are seeking a Project Development Director to drive our Powered Land Development projects from concept through commercial operation, owning project execution, managing key stakeholder relationships, and contributing to strategic growth.
This role is ideal for an experienced development professional who combines strategic thinking with hands-on execution and thrives in high-growth startup environments. You'll own a portfolio of projects, driving timelines, managing external partners, and ensuring successful delivery. You'll work closely with senior leadership to shape development strategy while maintaining deep involvement in day-to-day project execution. You'll manage relationships with data center operators, utilities, energy partners, and consultants, and play a key role in building scalable processes as we grow.
Your Day-to-Day
  • End-to-End Project Execution: You will drive data center development projects from site identification through commercial operation, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery while maintaining quality standards. You will manage critical paths, remove blockers, and coordinate seamlessly across development stages.
  • Team Development: You will mentor and develop project managers and junior team members, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence. You will help scale team capabilities, provide coaching and feedback, and contribute to hiring efforts as the organization grows.
  • Stakeholder Management: You will cultivate and manage relationships with data center customers, utilities, landowners, consultants, and engineering firms. You will navigate complex negotiations, develop strong partnerships, and ensure stakeholder alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Strategic Contribution: You will contribute to business development efforts, including evaluating new opportunities, conducting feasibility assessments, and translating technical constraints into commercial decisions. You will work with sales and leadership to qualify prospects and structure deals.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: You will collaborate closely with our CEO, COO, engineering, sales, and operations teams to align on priorities, resolve challenges, and drive projects forward. Your ability to bridge technical execution with business strategy will be essential.
  • Process Development: You will help build and refine development processes, templates, and best practices as the organization scales, contributing to operational excellence across the team.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in data center or renewable development, with demonstrated ownership of projects from early-stage through commercial operation.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and developing team members with a track record of scaling teams and processes.
  • Strong understanding of data center design, construction, power requirements, and operational needs across various use cases (hyperscale, colocation, edge, HPC/AI).
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex stakeholder relationships including enterprise customers, utilities, engineering firms, and landowners.
  • Strong knowledge of power infrastructure, interconnection processes, utility coordination, and electrical systems for large load facilities.
  • Experience with land acquisition, permitting, environmental review, and securing project entitlements.
  • Outstanding communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset who thrives in fast-paced, high-growth startup environments.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, building processes from scratch, and adapting quickly to changing priorities.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with colocated data center and renewable energy projects.
  • Background in energy markets, power procurement, or renewable energy development.
  • Experience working at a high-growth startup or scaling operations.
  • Established network within the IPP and data center industries.
  • Previous experience in multiple geographic markets and regulatory environments, including ERCOT.

Company Culture
  • We are free thinkers, we believe in meritocracy, we challenge assumptions meticulously, and we don't get overly emotional if we're wrong.
  • We believe in providing freedom and responsibility to foster a growth culture based on trust, transparency, and teamwork.
  • We encourage each other to seek discipline and focus in all parts of life, so that we can always perform at our best on the job.
  • We are a distributed team on a mission to build decentralized global power markets.

Benefits
  • Bonus plan, 401k, and equity participation.
  • Medical, Dental and Vision.
  • Phone and Internet stipend.
  • Home office stipend.
  • Flexible PTO.
  • Company gatherings in fun places - the best of being fully remote while still coming together regularly!
  • Benefits vary for international applicants.
