Job description

The Assistant Counselor is a seasonal position that reports to the Director of Speech and Debate camp.
  • The Introduction to Speech and Debate program will run from June 22 - 26, 2026 and the expected hours of work are 8:30-3:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
  • The Debate program will run from July 13 - 17, 2026 and the hours of work are 8:30 am -3:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
  • The Speech program will run from July 20 - 24, 2026 and the expected hours of work are 8:30-3:30 pm, Monday-Friday.

Pre-camp staff training, lesson planning, classroom setup will take place the week of June 15 with mandatory all staff training scheduled for June 9. The Assistant Counselor is an integral part of the summer camp staff and is responsible for supporting the Director of the Speech and Debate program in ensuring that the summer camp is a safe, fun and enriching experience for the campers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assisting the Director in executing daily lesson plans including debate/speech practice, research and speech preparation.
  • Actively participate in all camp activities to help build relationships with campers.
  • Supervise campers at all times, including lunch and recess time prioritizing their well being and safety.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures established by Summer@Potomac.
  • Assist in cleaning, maintaining and ensuring proper use of Summer@Potomac facilities and equipment.
  • Use positive and proactive techniques to resolve any camper behavioral issues. Effectively communicate such issues to the Director.
  • Assist in morning arrival and afternoon dismissal of campers
  • Participate in staff orientations, pre-camp staff training, preparations for camp opening and meetings.
  • Adhere to the procedures and policies outlined in The Summer@Potomac Staff Handbook.
  • Participate in both morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
  • Assist with completing and submitting an accurate inventory lists to the camp office, ensuring that all listed items match the materials returned to storage
  • Assist with the end-of-summer check-out procedures for assigned classrooms, ensuring all classrooms are left in better condition than they were found.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Previous experience of providing care to children is a plus.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to engage and connect with campers of different ages and backgrounds.
  • Responsible, energetic, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude.
  • Physical ability to participate in activities with campers (run, sit on the floor, walk and stand for longer periods of time).
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, taking direction from the Director and collaborating with other staff members.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences within a diverse population of campers and staff.
  • Ability and willingness to follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Summer@Potomac Handbook.
