Position Summary

The Basic Needs Resource Programs Assistant (Programs Assistant) is an SSP IA trainee level appointment working under the lead direction of the Student Health, Counseling & Wellness Services (SHCWS), Basic Needs Resource Center Coordinator (SSP-III) and with direct supervision from the Director of CARES, Basic Needs & Wellness.  During the trainee period, which is not to exceed 12 months, the Programs Assistant is expected to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to function under general supervision at the SSP IB working level. 

This incumbent will assist with mentoring and providing day-to-day guidance to paid student assistants and staff assigned to the Basic Needs Resource Center, under the supervision of professional staff.  The Programs Assistant supports the work of the Basic Needs Resource Center Coordinator in developing, implementing and managing programs and services supporting students' basic needs. The Programs Assistant, as directed by the Basic Needs Resource Center Coordinator, will work collaboratively with the Health and Wellness Promotion (HWP) department team, SHCWS staff, and campus partners to support student services, deliver and promote campus policy, systems, and environmental changes to support student wellness.

The Programs Assistant will assist the coordinators of basic needs focused programs within the SHCWS with design, development, and implementation of programs and initiatives tailored to the needs and interests of the university community. The incumbent provides support for the implementation of program goals and assists with developing collaborations and partnerships - under the guidance of professional staff - to address students' basic needs insecurities. This includes utilizing best practices in basic needs, health, nutrition and wellness to create a supportive campus environment that promotes student well-being and academic success, reduces stigma and barriers to accessing services, and encourages positive health behaviors.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: Anticipated salary rate is $4,150 per month

Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; and the techniques and methods of interviewing. Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty.

Experience:

No prior experience is required; however, exposure to student services, peer education, health promotion, or wellness initiatives in a college setting is preferred.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a jobrelated field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a yearforyear basis

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Completion of one academic year Peer Health Educator student assistant internship position.
  2. Complete of one of more years as a Peer Health Educator Lead Student Assistant.
  3. Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture with diverse populations
  4. Competency in cross-cultural communication
  5. Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives
  6. Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advanced notice
  7. CPR/BLS Certification
