About the role Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for researching, planning, designing, and developing mechanical products and systems. This includes instruments, controls, engines, and machines used in energy production, transmission, and measurement.
This job profile is intended for early-career professionals who apply broad theoretical knowledge and require the ability to investigate and analyze problems. Solutions are typically discussed/verified with a more senior member.

Sulzer is offering a unique opportunity for early-career engineers to jumpstart their professional journey through a dynamic two-year rotational program. This immersive experience provides direct exposure across key departments within Sulzer's Services Division, with the goal of permanent department placement upon program completion.

Position Summary: The Rotational Engineer program is a two-year rotational program designed to attract, develop, and retain high-potential, transformative engineers through best-in-industry rotational experience and professional development. This program supports the Services Division in the Americas by leading hands-on and strategic initiatives that enhance commercial and operational excellence. Acts as a bridge between engineering, commercial, and operations - designing and implementing shop-floor solutions, automation, supporting technical documentation, collaborating with vendors, and driving continuous improvement. Participants will rotate through four specialized areas, focusing on sales, operations, or engineering, each lasting six months:

  • Steam Turbines and Compressor: Overhauls and assembly, rotor and component repairs, reverse engineering and parts manufacturing, performance rerates, performance qualification tests, custom engineering solutions, and field service

  • Gas Turbine (Industrial and Aeroderivative): Overhauls and assembly, rotor and component repairs, metallurgical evaluations, performance testing, and field service

  • Pumps: Overhauls and assembly, rotor and component repairs, reverse engineering and parts manufacturing, performance optimization, retrofits, hydraulic testing, and field service

  • Electro-Mechanical Services: Overhauls and repairs of motors and generators, generator rewind, high voltage coil manufacturing, engineering services, and field services

Rotations I & II: Carefully selected to match your current skills and future ambitions, ensuring a personalized and enriching start to the program.

Rotations III & IV: You take the wheel-choose from a range of opportunities across departments to deepen expertise, explore new interests, and shape your unique path.

Candidates will be considered for all hiring Service Center locations which include but not limited to the following cities:

Houston, TX, Margate, FL, Chattanooga, TN, Barboursville, WV, Los Angeles, CA, Joliet, IL, Aurora, CO, Baton Rouge, LA, Piedmont, SC, Odessa, TX, Mobile, AL, Salt Lake City, UT, Phoenix, AZ, Gillette, WY, Colton, CA, and Orange, TX.

All candidates must be willing to relocate to any of these locations, or other Sulzer sites while in the program. Sulzer provides a locally adjusted housing allowance and mileage reimbursement to next rotation location, along with five business days of transfer time (excluding home-based placements).

Functions

  • Participate or lead job tasks, production duties, and process improvement initiatives identified and assigned by Supervisor.

  • Design, develop, implement, or upgrade drawings, work instructions, procedures, technical documentation, tooling and fixturing improvements.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to source and qualify solutions.

  • Balance immediate troubleshooting support with long-term strategic projects.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing or Automation Engineering.

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn technical and design aspects of rotation equipment service and repairs.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface with personnel from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the organization.

  • Pays close attention to details, especially measurements, safety, or technical documentation.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project-management skills

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Flexibility to work overtime, and Saturdays as needed.

  • Ability to work in a physically active industrial shop environment.

  • Ability and willingness to relocate while in the program.

  • Ability and willingness to begin the program in January or July.

  • Authorization to work in the USA without restriction or sponsorship.
