Job Summary

The Sports Director is responsible for the leadership, development, and administration of high-quality sports programs that support the YMCA’s mission to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This role oversees leagues, clinics, camps, and tournaments while ensuring safe, inclusive, and engaging experiences for all participants.

Job Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Development

  • Plan, organize, and evaluate youth and adult sports programs (leagues, clinics, camps, tournaments, and special events).
  • Ensure programs align with YMCA mission, values, and community needs.
  • Develop seasonal program schedules, rules, and formats.

Staff & Volunteer Management

  • Manage schedule of assistant sports director.
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise referees.
  • Recruit and support volunteer coaches.

Member & Community Engagement

  • Deliver excellent customer service to members, participants, and families.
  • Address concerns, incidents, and conflict resolution professionally and promptly.
  • Build relationships with schools, community organizations, and local partners.

Operations & Risk Management

  • Oversee facility usage, gym schedules, and field coordination.
  • Ensure equipment is safe, maintained, and inventoried.
  • Enforce YMCA policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA standards, background checks, and certifications.

Budget & Administration

  • Assist in developing and managing the sports department budget.
  • Monitor revenue, expenses, and program profitability.
  • Maintain accurate records, registrations, rosters, and reports.
  • Support marketing and promotion of sports programs.

  • Summer high school volleyball and basketball programs
  • Adult volleyball and basketball leagues
  • Youth club basketball league
  • Youth club volleyball league
  • Basketball and volleyball clinics – summer and holiday breaks

  • Various youth camps/tournaments
  • New sports programs as the need arises

Key deliverables for this position include:

Expectations

  • Dedication to the scope of the role and willingness to put in hours as needed to ensure excellence in the programs. Non-typical work schedule with nights and weekend hours, some weeks requiring extra time due to program needs. THIS IS NOT AN 8-5 AND NO WEEKENDS JOB.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of sports: basketball, volleyball, football, and soccer.

  • Organization and communication skills to be able to manage, balance, and plan.
  • College degree preferred or the equivalent work experience in a related field.
  • First aid and CPR certification within 30 days of hire
  • Bilingual (Spanish) additional benefit

Pay and benefits of the position:

  • Pay range - $45,000 - $52,000
  • Health insurance – employee only - 75% Y pay, 25% employee pay
  • PTO time – (Paid Time Off) depending upon years of experience
  • YMCA Membership – depending upon family/life situation (family, adult, etc.)
  • Free program fees – depending upon family/life situation
  • 1 paid conference annually (registration fees, travel, food, lodging)
