TRANSITION ACADEMY WORK-BASED LEARNING

Autism Works Student Mentor

Reports to: Autism Works Program Coordinator and Work Based Learning Coordinator

Job Status: Non-Exempt

DAY/HOURS OF JOB: Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Friday

Shift 1: Monday (1:30 – 4:00 PM) & Tuesday (8:30 AM – 3:30 PM)

Shift 2: Tuesday (8:30 AM – 3:30 PM) & Friday (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM)

Job Summary:

The Autism Works Mentor serves as a role model for students participating in Autism Works classes. The mentor accompanies the Autism Works facilitator to public school classrooms. The mentor assists the facilitator with materials, participates in lessons, and supports students as needed.

Job Assignment:

The position/term Mentor is used to designate people working with and assisting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during Autism Works classes. Mentors are assigned to classes and schools on a semester-by-semester basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Autism Works Mentor assists with;

  • Passing out and collecting materials
  • Helping students understand Social Emotional Learning concepts
  • Identifying and discussing emotions
  • Using self-regulation and coping skills
  • Physical capacities include but are not limited to; light lifting, walking, standing and sitting

Qualifications:

  • Hardesty Transition Academy Student

Special Requirements/Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

  • Professional appearance and demeanor, including appropriate attire, good hygiene, and effective communication skills.
  • Responsible, dependable, and able to manage time effectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student and participant information.
  • Valid form of identification.
  • Follow all A New Leaf, Inc. policies, procedures, and training requirements.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals served.
  • Open-minded, cooperative, and willing to learn.
  • Basic reading, writing, math, computer, and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to participate in physical activities and stand, sit, or walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform light to moderate lifting, bending, reaching, and other physical tasks as needed.
