Job description

In partnership with Woolwich Community Health Centre (WCHC) staff and the Region of Waterloo Public Health Dental staff, the Oral Health Peer Support Assistant will provide outreach, linkages and information specific to oral health in the communities of Woolwich and Wellesley Townships. The Oral Health Peer Support Assistant will promote the Healthy Smiles Ontario program specifically, and the Region of Waterloo Public Health Dental program generally.


This position is 0.56FTE (works to7hrs a day over 3 days)

Specific Duties


  1. Promote Healthy Smiles Ontario through:

    1. Direct contact with community members, community partners with links to low income families and community health centre staff

    2. Distribution of Healthy Smiles Ontario promotional material

  2. Promote Oral Health through:

    1. General and targeted oral health awareness and education in group settings, community health fairs and individual interactions with families

    2. Distribution of oral health resources (i.e. toothbrushes, floss, timers) through interactions with groups/individual

  3. Support dental screening services at WCHC. Identify and book clients for appointments at WCHC. Provide support to clients, as possible, in attending the appointment. Work collaboratively with Region of Waterloo Public Health Dental staff to provide screening and education for these clinics.

  4. Perform various administrative duties and maintain accurate and complete documentation as per Region of Waterloo Public Health Dental program and WCHC.

  5. Meet regularly with Public Health Dental Staff for training and mentorship.

Qualifications

  1. Dental assistant training or equivalent preferred, but not required
  2. Excellent organizational and communication

  3. Knowledge/experience with oral health is an

  4. Strong interpersonal

  5. Ability to work independently with minimal

  6. Demonstrated ability to work

  7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and Second language is an asset (i.e. Plautdietsch).

  8. Experience working effectively with culturally and economically diverse

  9. Lived experience related to low/limited income, and difficulty accessing needed services as a

  10. Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and software programs including Microsoft Office, email and internet.

  11. Ability to work flexible

  12. Access to personal transportation.
