Production Manager Injection Molding information

What is a production manager injection molding?

Production Managers in Injection Molding oversee the manufacturing process of plastic parts using injection molding machines. They are responsible for managing production schedules, ensuring product quality, optimizing efficiency, and leading teams of operators and technicians. Their role typically includes coordinating maintenance, troubleshooting production issues, and ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards. By managing resources and workflow, they help ensure that production targets and deadlines are met while maintaining high-quality output.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a production manager injection molding?

To thrive as a Production Manager in Injection Molding, you need expertise in manufacturing processes, quality control, and a degree in engineering or a related field, often coupled with significant industry experience. Familiarity with injection molding machinery, ERP/MRP systems, and certifications such as Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing teams and resolving production issues. These competencies ensure efficient operations, consistent product quality, and the ability to meet production targets in a demanding manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by a production manager injection molding, and how can they be addressed?

Production Managers in injection molding often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, minimizing downtime due to machine maintenance or mold changes, and meeting tight production deadlines. Addressing these issues typically involves implementing preventative maintenance schedules, optimizing workflow processes, and fostering strong communication between operators, quality assurance, and engineering teams. Continuous training and leveraging data-driven production monitoring systems can also help quickly identify and resolve issues, ensuring smooth operations and high-quality output.

What is the difference between Production Manager Injection Molding vs Manufacturing Supervisor?

AspectProduction Manager Injection MoldingManufacturing Supervisor
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or manufacturing, with experience in injection molding processesOften requires a high school diploma or associate degree, with relevant manufacturing experience
Work EnvironmentOversees injection molding facilities, managing production schedules and quality controlSupervises daily manufacturing operations on the shop floor across various departments
Industry UsageCommonly employed in plastics, automotive, and consumer goods manufacturing

The main difference is that the Production Manager Injection Molding focuses specifically on managing injection molding processes and teams, often requiring specialized technical knowledge. In contrast, the Manufacturing Supervisor oversees broader manufacturing operations, which may include multiple production lines and processes. Both roles require leadership skills, but the Production Manager injection Molding typically involves more technical expertise related to injection molding equipment and quality standards.

Job description

Description
Summary:
The Process Engineer is responsible for establishing, stabilizing, and sustaining robust molding processes that deliver safe, repeatable, and cost-effective production. This role owns process definition, control, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement across injection molding operations. The Process Engineer ensures molding processes are documented, controlled, trained, enforced, and partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Tool Room, and Quality to eliminate variability, scrap, and downtime.
In This Role, You'll Have The Opportunity To:
โ€ข Establish scientifically validated process windows for PP, PC, and similar resins.
โ€ข Define and maintain golden settings based on melt temperature and shear, injection velocity profiles, pack/hold pressure and time, cooling efficiency and mold temperature control.
โ€ข Apply viscosity, shrinkage, and crystallization behavior (PP) and thermal sensitivity (PC) to process design.
โ€ข Own process setup sheets, standard work, and controlled parameter limits.
โ€ข Accountable not only for defining molding processes, but for training and mentoring the organization to run and protect them correctly.
โ€ข Lead engineering analysis of complex defects, including flow hesitation, jetting, sinks, warp, blush, splay, burns, voids, and dimensional instability.
โ€ข Correlate defects to material condition (moisture, degradation), mold design (venting, cooling, gating), and machine dynamics (pressure response, screw recovery).
โ€ข Use DOE, cavity pressure trends, and SPC data to drive permanent solutions
โ€ข Partner with Tool Room and Maintenance to optimize cooling circuit performance, venting and gas evacuation, ejection and part release.
โ€ข Support mold trials, steel-safe changes, and new tool introductions.
โ€ข Ensure molds are technically capable of running defined process windows.
โ€ข Provide engineering input on wear components and mold PM requirements.
โ€ข Own molding-related process capability (Cp/Cpk)
โ€ข Implement SPC on critical process parameters and part characteristics.
โ€ข Transition quality control from inspection-based to process-controlled.
โ€ข Support investigations into scrap, quality holds, and customer complaints with data-driven analysis.
โ€ข Support commissioning and validation of electric, hydraulic, and hybrid injection molding presses, robots and downstream automation, dryers, chillers, and material handling systems.
โ€ข Verify machine capability relative to material and mold requirements.
โ€ข Optimize cycle time without compromising part performance or mold life.
โ€ข Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and quality policies and procedures.
โ€ข Support shift coordination and effective communication to maintain process consistency.
โ€ข Other tasks as assigned.
Requirements
What You Need To Succeed:
โ€ข Deep knowledge of injection molding processes, mold design, material behavior, and process parameters.
โ€ข Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and process data.
โ€ข Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
โ€ข Experience with statistical process control (SPC), root cause analysis, and quality improvement tools.
โ€ข Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
โ€ข Ability to work independently and take initiative on process improvements.
โ€ข Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
โ€ข Computer skills including MS Office and manufacturing execution systems (MES).
Education and Experience:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Plastics, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or related)
  • 7-10 years of hands-on injection molding process engineering experience
  • Strong understanding of PP and PC material behavior in molding applications
  • Proven ability to analyze data and solve complex process problems

Preferred
  • RJG Master Molder I or II or equivalent scientific molding certification
  • DOE, SPC, and Six Sigma exposure

Experience in high-volume, multi-press manufacturing environments
