Both roles are essential in manufacturing industries and often overlap in skills and work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Production Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and problem-solving, usually supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, Six Sigma methodologies, and manufacturing execution systems (MES) is typically required, and certifications like Lean Manufacturing or PMP can be beneficial. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively are essential soft skills for this role. These skills enable Production Engineers to enhance production efficiency, ensure product quality, and drive continuous improvement in manufacturing environments.

What Is a Production Engineer?

A production engineer works in industrial settings to streamline processes and maximize efficiency. As a production engineer, your job duties include analyzing the quality of current procedures and processes, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing strategies to reduce waste and boost productivity. The role requires strong observational and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to communicate complex, highly technical concepts to non-technical colleagues and company management. You can find production engineer jobs in the manufacturing industry and with government agencies.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by Production Engineers in a manufacturing environment?

Production Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing production processes to improve efficiency while maintaining product quality. They must troubleshoot equipment malfunctions promptly to minimize downtime and collaborate closely with maintenance, quality assurance, and operations teams. Additionally, adapting to new technologies and implementing process improvements within tight deadlines requires strong problem-solving skills and effective communication. Balancing cost control with production targets is also a frequent consideration.

What are Production Engineers?

Production Engineers are professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes within a facility. They focus on improving efficiency, reducing costs, maintaining product quality, and ensuring safety standards are met. Production Engineers often collaborate with other teams to troubleshoot issues, introduce new technologies, and streamline workflow. Their work is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, electronics, and consumer goods.

We are seeking a Production Engineer, Journeyman to support our customer in Crane, Indiana. In this role, you will provide manufacturing and production engineering support for Electronic Warfare (EW) systems, subsystems, equipment, and components. The position supports the development of manufacturing procedures and processes, evaluation of production methods and proposals, process improvement, reproducibility of technical data, and engineering support for initial production, sustainment, and system modification efforts. This position is ideal for an engineer who can bridge design, manufacturing, and production execution in a mission-focused environment. The successful candidate will support production-related engineering tasks, assess manufacturing technologies and processes, evaluate acceptance criteria and logistics impacts, and provide technical recommendations that improve producibility, quality, maintainability, and life-cycle performance.

This role requires in-person support.

Duties:
  • Support the development of manufacturing procedures and processes for systems, subsystems, equipment, and components.
  • Perform manufacturing engineering and technology support across tasks such as CAD/CAM design support, facility and equipment requirement studies, production cost estimating, make-or-buy analysis, production capability studies, process evaluation, and additive manufacturing support.
  • Review and analyze manufacturing technologies and processes and provide recommendations regarding their application to Government system and equipment acquisitions.
  • Prepare manufacturing procedures, process documentation, and technical analyses for Government review.
  • Support production engineering tasks and evaluation of manufacturing proposals in accordance with project specifications.
  • Ensure required data is generated to support system, subsystem, equipment, and component reproducibility.
  • Evaluate and help develop procedures and acceptance criteria for tests, maintenance, and logistics requirements.
  • Support manufacturing processes, methods, and technologies associated with development and initial production of new systems, as well as major modification or improvement programs for existing systems.
  • Review production engineering changes, waivers, deviations, and alterations for impact on performance, reliability, maintainability, availability, quality, safety, and life-cycle cost.
  • Support production planning and related engineering logistics efforts as part of broader system integration and acquisition life-cycle support.
  • Coordinate with design, systems, logistics, test, and maintenance teams to ensure producibility and supportability are incorporated into engineering decisions.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering recommendations, and other required work products supporting customer decisions and contract data requirements.
Desired Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Desired Experience:

  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience in production engineering, manufacturing engineering, process engineering, industrial engineering, or related technical production support.
  • Experience developing or evaluating manufacturing processes, work instructions, technical procedures, or production documentation.
  • Experience supporting production/process evaluation, cost estimating, capability assessments, or make-or-buy analysis.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM tools, production methods, and engineering documentation practices.
  • Ability to assess engineering changes and manufacturing decisions for impact on quality, performance, reliability, maintainability, and cost.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering, production, logistics, and test teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting DoD, Navy, depot, sustainment, or defense manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with initial production support, prototype-to-production transition, or modification/upgrade programs.
  • Experience with production capability studies, process improvement, acceptance criteria development, or producibility assessments.
  • Experience reviewing manufacturing proposals, technical data packages, engineering changes, waivers, or deviations.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing and its application to low-volume or specialized production environments.
  • Experience coordinating production engineering efforts with test, maintenance, logistics, and systems engineering stakeholders.
