3 Key Consulting is hiring a Packaging Engineer โ€“ Drug Product Packaging & Verification Testing for a consulting engagement with our direct client, a leading global biopharmaceutical company.
Position Overview:
This role supports new drug product packaging initiatives, with a primary focus on packaging verification testing at a newly established site dedicated to packaging development and testing. We are seeking a qualified Packaging Engineer with a strong foundation in packaging principles and hands-on testing experience. Candidates from the pharmaceutical and biotech industries are preferred; however, individuals with relevant experience in food or consumer products packaging will also be considered.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Packaging (or closely related field) along with demonstrated packaging engineering experience. Proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator is required. Candidates should have approximately 5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical packaging and must be willing to relocate to the New Albany, OH area at their own expense.
Role Summary:
This external contractor position reports to the Packaging Engineering group within Combination Product Operations (CPO) and is based in New Albany, OH. The role supports global supply, new product introductions, partnerships/acquisitions, and combination products. The selected candidate will apply engineering principles to the design, qualification, and implementation of primary and secondary packaging components, as well as associated systems including documentation, equipment, and processes.
A strong understanding of healthcare packaging materials is essential, including structural components such as bottles, labels, trays, lidding materials, leaflets, paperboard, sterile barrier systems, and corrugate. The role may include opportunities for entry-level leadership responsibilities and requires strong organizational, project management, technical problem-solving, and communication skills. The ability to collaborate cross-functionally and adapt in a fast-paced, evolving environment is critical for success.

Top Must Have Skills:
  • Packaging education and experience (minimum bachelors degree)
  • AutoCAD and illustrator software
  • 5 YOE in pharmaceutical or related industry packaging.

Day to Day Responsibilities:
  • Lead testing and evaluations to recommend and select primary and secondary packaging materials for both large and small molecule products
  • Perform distribution testing per ASTM D4169. Complete testing standards using ASTM, ISO, TAPPI, USP and EP
  • Writing of test protocols, perform technical evaluations and testing to support reports used to uphold the use of selected materials and packaging components
  • Creating specifications along with implementation through technical change records
  • Build, modify, and approve engineering drawings using AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Solid Works, or similar software applications
  • Assist in troubleshooting and leading investigations on Packaging Component problems for areas in production, warehouse, incoming inspection (minor and major deviation lead)
  • Support line trials and packaging validation activities prior to introduction of any new or change in components/processes
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams (i.e. Manufacturing, Process Development, Quality, Supply Chain, Maintenance, Device Engineering, Primary Container Engineering, Artwork/Labeling, Regulatory, etc.) in pre-commercial and commercial activities

Basic Qualifications:
Master degree OR Bachelor degree and 2 years of experience OR Associate degree and 6 years of experience OR High school diploma / GED and 8 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Packaging, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering field
  • 7+ years of packaging engineering experience with 4+ years within the Pharma/Bio industry
