The Opportunity with McKinstry

McKinstry is currently seeking a Senior Technical Product Manager in Offsite Manufacturing division located in Seattle, WA. The Technical Product Manager is responsible for driving McKinstry's modular products through their full lifecycle - from concept and design through prototyping, industrialization, and production launch. This role bridges engineering, manufacturing operations, and program management to ensure that products are manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with both customer and business requirements. In short, the role manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of complex product lines.

The role requires a blend of technical expertise (DfMA, prototyping, and manufacturing optimization) and program leadership (cross-functional coordination, timelines, cost control, and risk management), ensuring new modular products are delivered on time, on budget, and at scale. Additional responsibilities may include:

Product Design, Development & NPI

  • Lead cross-functional teams through the product lifecycle: concept, design validation, prototyping, testing, and production launch.

  • Understand and apply DfMA/DfA principles to ensure manufacturability, scalability, and efficiency of new products.

  • Collaborate to refine and optimize product designs for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).

  • Direct prototype builds, conduct first-article inspections, and iterate design based on test feedback.

  • Partner with modeling/detailing teams to refine 3D models, drawings, and shop packages.

  • Make recommendations for software purchases and in-house design tools to improve efficiency and design capabilities of the team.

  • Track current industry trends, ensuring that the company maintains and expands its technology leadership position.

Manufacturing Integration & Optimization

  • Collaborate with production operations and suppliers to validate tolerances, processes, and assembly sequences.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing vendors/suppliers/mechanics to ensure tolerances can be met and the appropriate applications are selected.

  • Optimize manufacturing processes for efficiency, quality, and scalability, including opportunities for automation and cost reduction.

  • Oversee transition from prototypes to production, ensuring smooth handoff to manufacturing teams.

  • Manage product testing and quality assurance activities to ensure compliance with standards and customer expectations.

Program / Project Management

  • Manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of multiple complex product lines.

  • Initiate projects to improve and/or extend the value proposition of the new product.

  • Propose recommendations, design solutions, and help define workflow to optimize, including detailing and 3D Modeling process, fabrication, production, and procurement process out of detailing software (primarily SolidWorks/Revit).

  • Lead the creation and review DFM/DFA documentation to ensure product design and engineering integrity are not compromised.

  • Oversee a robust project management process and delivery timelines to keep R&D projects on schedule and on budget.

  • Establish and track project schedules, budgets, risks, resource plans and deliverables to align with new product development program objectives.

  • Monitor scope and evaluate/approve changes with potential impact on cost or schedule.

  • Innovate, Investigate, evaluate, and troubleshoot existing system operations.

  • Drive QA/QC in engineering deliverables and enforce standards across the development cycle.

Customer & Market Interface

  • Support Business Development in new account opportunities by providing technical and manufacturability input during RFQs, proposals, and program reviews.

  • Support co-product development partnerships with strategic customers to expand modular product platforms.

  • Participate in program negotiations to align customer expectations with manufacturing capacity and cost models.

Team Development & Leadership

  • As a key member of the engineering and manufacturing teams responsible for managing products through new product development lifecycles. Mentor and guide engineers, technicians, and cross-disciplinary team members.

  • Contribute to the development of engineering talent within the organization.

  • Promote innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement in product development.

  • Build strong partnerships with manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and business development teams.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (master's preferred).

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration is preferred.

  • Understanding of building codes, AHJ, and product listings preferred.

  • 12-15+ years of total work experience in a technical or engineering field

  • 5-7+ years of experience specifically in product development, program management, or manufacturing engineering in modular/prefabricated mechanical or electrical products.

  • High level of attention to detail required.

  • Experience working in a product manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.

  • Proven success in managing NPI projects and industrializing new products at scale.

  • Strong knowledge of CAD/PLM tools (SolidWorks, Revit, PDM/PLM systems) is preferred.

  • Experience with pipe and/or steel fabrication, modular assembly, and prototyping preferred.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills; ability to bridge technical and commercial teams.

  • PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent certifications a plus.

The pay range for this position is $105,030 - $185,500 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
