Job description

Estimator / Procurement Specialist

About the Opportunity

A leading renewable energy EPC is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Estimator / Procurement Specialist to support the design, engineering, procurement, and execution of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage (BESS) projects.

This junior-to-mid-level position supports both project delivery and business development by developing accurate project estimates, maintaining supplier and subcontractor relationships, and helping optimize procurement strategies from the bidding phase through project execution.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with business development, engineering, construction, finance, procurement, and project management teams, as well as external consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

  • Develop project estimates and procurement strategies for utility-scale solar PV and BESS projects.
  • Support procurement across major project categories, including civil works, structural racking, PV modules, electrical systems (DC, AC, medium- and high-voltage), inverters, transformers, installation activities, and site facilities.
  • Maintain supplier and subcontractor databases, including benchmark pricing, lead times, vendor contacts, and approved vendor lists.
  • Prepare and issue RFPs and RFQs, evaluate proposals, support commercial negotiations, and help resolve procurement, logistics, and delivery challenges.
  • Support project buyout by refining estimate assumptions, obtaining current quotations, confirming delivery terms, and coordinating with project teams.
  • Develop project-specific procurement strategies in collaboration with business development, finance, engineering, operations, and project execution teams.
  • Manage supplier qualification, performance, and documentation requirements, including insurance, warranties, lien waivers, and delivery obligations.
  • Support project logistics planning, including Incoterms, customs responsibilities, and delivery scheduling.
  • Coordinate with engineering and project management to verify material take-offs, procurement requirements, shop drawings, and subcontractor bids.
  • Prepare project cost estimates and pricing proposals for management and client review.
  • Help improve procurement procedures, cost structures, reporting tools, and operational processes.
  • Support future ERP implementation initiatives while working primarily within Excel-based estimating and procurement tools.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts related to engineering standardization, reporting, and cost management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, Economics, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Approximately 3–5 years of estimating, procurement, or related project experience with an EPC, general contractor, utility, civil contractor, electrical contractor, or similar construction organization.
  • Practical understanding of construction practices and how civil, structural, and electrical scope decisions impact project pricing.
  • Utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with transferable experience from electrical, civil, industrial, utility, or infrastructure construction are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and web-based tools.
  • Experience with ERP systems is considered an asset; SAP experience is not required.
  • Experience supporting quotations, bid comparisons, supplier negotiations, and project buyout activities.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment with four days per week in the Calgary office.
  • Ability to travel periodically to project sites, suppliers, and subcontractors throughout Canada and the United States.
  • Ability to handle confidential and proprietary information.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: CA$90,000–$110,000, with flexibility for exceptional candidates.
  • Performance bonus opportunity of up to 10%.
  • RRSP matching program.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
  • Hybrid work schedule with four days per week in the Calgary office.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale renewable energy infrastructure projects with a collaborative and growing team.
