What are private chefs?

Private chefs are culinary professionals who are hired to prepare meals exclusively for individuals, families, or organizations, typically in private residences. Unlike restaurant chefs, private chefs often design customized menus to suit their clients’ dietary preferences and needs, and may also handle grocery shopping, meal planning, and kitchen management. Their services can be full-time, part-time, or for special occasions and events, providing a personalized dining experience. Private chefs often bring restaurant-quality cuisine into the home and sometimes travel with their clients or work at multiple locations.

What do private chefs charge per hour?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Private Chef, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Chef, you need advanced culinary skills, menu planning experience, and often formal culinary training or certification. These abilities ensure high-quality, customized dining experiences and build long-term client trust.

Both Private Chefs and Personal Chefs prepare customized meals for clients, often in private settings. The main difference lies in their work environment and scope: Private Chefs typically work exclusively for one client or family, often in their private residence or yacht, providing a highly personalized service. Personal Chefs may serve multiple clients, preparing meals in their homes or delivering prepared meals. While credentials are similar, Private Chefs usually work in more exclusive, high-end environments.

Private chefs typically earn between $50,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the cuisine. They may also receive additional compensation such as housing, travel allowances, or performance bonuses, especially when working for high-net-worth clients or in luxury settings.

What are some common challenges Private Chefs face when working in clients' homes?

Private Chefs often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar kitchens, managing limited or specialized equipment, and meeting unique dietary preferences or restrictions of clients. Flexibility is essential, as schedules and menus may change on short notice, and privacy concerns require discretion and professionalism. Building strong client relationships while maintaining high culinary standards is key to success in this role.

What Does a Private Chef Do?

A private chef prepares meals for clients, usually in the client’s home kitchen. In addition to meal prep, a private chef cooks food and may plate the food as well. A private chef typically only works for one client, while a personal chef may take on many clients, according to the American Personal and Private Chef Association (APPCA). The type of food that a private chef cooks depends on the dietary needs and preferences of the client.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW
A warm, welcoming family is seeking an experienced Private Chef to become a long-term part of their household. This is an incredible opportunity for a chef who genuinely enjoys cooking fresh, healthy food, values building relationships, and thrives in a dynamic private home where no two days look exactly the same.

The family's meals are intentionally simple, nourishing, and beautifully prepared rather than overly elaborate. The successful chef will create thoughtful daily menus centered around fresh ingredients, accommodate specialized dietary needs, and keep the kitchen running seamlessly while remaining flexible as family schedules naturally evolve.

While culinary talent is essential, personality is equally important. The family hopes to find someone who is upbeat, adaptable, easy to be around, and enjoys becoming a trusted part of the household.

THE FAMILY & HOUSEHOLD

  • Household: Husband and wife, their two-year-old daughter, and a baby due this August.
  • Additional Team Members: A long-term nanny and housekeeper, who typically join the family for lunch each weekday.
  • Dining Preferences:
    • The Mrs. follows a very specific low-histamine, macro-focused nutritional program. All meals are prepared fresh daily using carefully sourced, high-quality ingredients, and leftovers are never served due to dietary restrictions.
    • The Mr. enjoys hearty, elevated comfort food with an emphasis on excellent steaks, Italian cuisine, and high-quality everyday cooking.
    • Their daughter eats alongside her parents and is encouraged to enjoy the same fresh, wholesome family meals.
  • Residences: The family's primary home is in Boston, with a secondary residence in Maine where they spend time throughout the year. The chef will travel with the family between both homes.

SCHEDULE & TRAVEL

  • Schedule: Primarily Monday-Friday, with flexibility for occasional weekends when the family is entertaining or traveling.
  • Typical Daily Rhythm (while the husband is traveling):
    • Lunch service around 12:00 PM
    • Dinner service around 5:30 PM
  • Family Schedule: When the family is together, the daily routine becomes more flexible, and dinner service may occasionally take place later in the evening.
  • Travel: The chef will travel with the family to their Maine residence throughout the year. Hotel accommodations will always be provided during travel.
  • Entertaining: The family entertains in a relaxed, welcoming style. Guests typically join for lunch a couple of times each month, with occasional larger gatherings and casual backyard-style barbecues.

LIVING ARRANGMENTS

  • Boston: Live-out position based at the family's primary residence in Boston.
  • Maine: The chef will stay in comfortable hotel accommodations while traveling with the family to their Maine residence.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily Culinary Operations
  • Prepare fresh daily lunch and dinner for the family
  • Prepare occasional family favorite baked goods and breakfast items
  • Ensure every meal is made fresh with no reliance on leftovers

Specialized Nutrition
  • Follow the Mrs.’s strict low-histamine dietary requirements
  • Prepare meals according to daily macro goals
  • Maintain consistency while offering variety and creativity
  • Adapt menus around seasonal ingredients and family preferences

Menu Planning & Sourcing
  • Plan weekly menus in collaboration with the Mrs.
  • Source premium organic ingredients
  • Purchase from preferred specialty vendors
  • Maintain kitchen inventory and grocery organization

Kitchen Management
  • Maintain an exceptionally clean and organized kitchen
  • Manage pantry inventory and food storage
  • Coordinate with the housekeeper as needed to keep the kitchen operating efficiently
  • Ensure all equipment remains properly maintained

Entertaining
  • Prepare beautifully presented meals for occasional guests
  • Plate individual meals for everyday dining
  • Transition to family-style service or casual entertaining when hosting

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The family is looking for someone who brings just as much warmth and flexibility as culinary talent. The ideal chef understands that private service is about more than preparing exceptional meals—it's about becoming a trusted presence in the home, anticipating needs, and adapting effortlessly to the family's evolving schedule.

Previous experience in a private household is strongly preferred, as this role requires someone who understands the unique rhythm of cooking for the same family each day. Candidates with both restaurant and private service experience are especially encouraged to apply, and those with experience aboard private yachts will likely transition exceptionally well due to the organization, adaptability, and high standards those environments demand.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Previous private household chef experience
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Experience preparing fresh, health-conscious cuisine
  • Comfort following detailed dietary protocols and nutritional guidelines
  • Excellent steak cookery skills
  • A positive, easygoing, and service-oriented personality
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and family needs
  • Confidence working independently and taking ownership of the kitchen
  • Professional discretion and a genuine interest in a long-term position
  • Experience preparing Arabic cuisine is a wonderful bonus but is not required.
  • Reliable personal vehicle is required

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • $110,000+ annual salary DOE
  • Fully covered health insurance
  • 401(k)
  • 20 days paid time off with flexible scheduling
  • Christmas and New Year's off
  • Relocation assistance available

WHY IS THIS ROLE SPECIAL?

This is a rare opportunity to join a kind, respectful family who truly values the people they welcome into their home.

You'll have the chance to prepare fresh, thoughtful meals using exceptional ingredients while building a long-term relationship with a family that appreciates professionalism, trust, and consistency. For the right chef, this is more than a job—it's a place to build a lasting career.
