Augusta, GA • On-site

Full-time

Posted 3 days ago

Job description

Manus works across industries and value chains to accelerate the transition to BioAlternatives - better performing and more sustainable versions of complex molecules traditionally sourced from plants, animals, or fossil fuels. Our platform bridges the Valley of Death between lab and manufacturing more efficiently and reliably, delivering the benefits of biomanufacturing today.
We are looking for a motivated and curious individual to join our Augusta, GA pilot plant team as a Pilot Plant Operator Apprentice. This is a structured, hands-on learning role designed for candidates who are early in their careers or transitioning into bioprocessing. You will receive direct mentorship from experienced operators and process development engineers as you build skills in fermentation and downstream processing operations.
You don't need to know everything on day one - you need a strong work ethic, a safety-first mindset, and a genuine interest in learning how cutting-edge biotechnology is turned into real products.
Why Work For Manus
  • Opportunity - For motivated, results-oriented team members, our growth creates opportunities for personal and professional advancement.
  • Accountability - You are given the resources you need to succeed and the freedom to make it happen; in return, we hold each other accountable for our high expectations.
  • Passion - We love what we do and enjoy working with others who feel the same way. We embrace the challenge and hard work that comes with working on the cutting edge.

What You'll Learn & Do
As an Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced operators, gaining hands-on exposure to all aspects of pilot plant operations. Your responsibilities will grow over time as your skills and confidence develop.
Downstream Processing (DSP)
  • Learn and perform downstream purification operations including centrifugation, filtration (TFF, depth, sterile), and basic chromatography under supervision.
  • Assist with set-up, operation, and cleaning of process equipment such as columns, tanks, and filtration systems.
  • Collect, label, and process in-process and final product samples with guidance.
  • Monitor and record process parameters to support accurate batch documentation.
  • Learn and perform CIP/SIP (cleaning and sterilization) procedures for equipment and cleanroom areas.

Pilot Plant Operations
  • Assist with day-to-day pilot plant activities, including equipment checks, routine maintenance tasks, and operational support.
  • Learn to identify and escalate process or equipment issues; participate in troubleshooting with the support of senior team members.
  • Help maintain inventory of consumables and initiate resupply requests.
  • Execute batch records under supervision, with a focus on accuracy and clear communication.
  • Support deviation investigations and continuous improvement efforts.

Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with the process development, upstream, and quality teams to support efficient process flow.
  • Participate in training on safety, environmental compliance, and quality systems.
  • Build relationships across the pilot plant team and ask questions - curiosity is encouraged.

Working Conditions
This role involves physical activity and exposure to industrial environments. Candidates should be comfortable with the following:
  • Work is performed on the third floor of the facility and requires occasional manual handling of materials, including carrying containers of process chemicals and glassware.
  • The role involves working around hot steam tanks; strict adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements is mandatory at all times.
  • At certain times, employees may be required to work in compliance with Manus Bio's lone worker safety protocols.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including respirators when needed.
  • Work schedule is shift-based and will vary based on the manufacturing plan.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Some exposure to a laboratory, manufacturing, or industrial environment preferred - but we will train the right candidate.
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully and support a strong safety culture.
  • Strong communication skills and a genuine desire to work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability - this is a start-up environment where priorities can shift.
  • High professional and ethical standards.
  • Basic computer skills (Windows, Microsoft Office).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or coursework in biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with fermentation, bioprocessing, or downstream processing concepts.
  • Experience with SAP or similar enterprise systems.
  • Delta V controls exposure.
  • Any certifications related to industrial operations, safety, or training delivery.
