Job description

General Position Summary & Responsibilities
The General Laborer I works as part of the production team to ensure that operational goals are met safely and efficiently. The General Laborer I will actively contribute to the production process by handling vehicles in a safe and organized manner to produce core and scrap products, enable customers to pull parts, and satisfy environmental requirements. The General Laborer I will uphold all company policies and procedures with a consistently diligent, cooperative, and professional demeanor.

Essential Functions
  • Work safely at all times and promote the Pick-n-Pull Safety Culture. Adhere to all safety requirements, maintain a safety-minded approach, and collaborate with your safety buddy. Wear assigned PPE correctly and consistently whenever it's required.
  • Adhere to and model all company policies and procedures, setting a consistent standard of compliance and professionalism for the team.
  • Safely remove Freon, power steering fluid, power brake fluid, batteries, excess garbage, and other materials in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Properly extract gasoline, coolant, waste oil, transfer case oil, catalytic converters, and other fluids and components in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Position vehicles on wheel stands to provide customers with safe access to sellable parts. Remove vehicles upon completion and restore the surrounding area in preparation for the next vehicle set, in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Loosen motor and transmission mounts and remove remaining tires and selected core items in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Remove heater cores, copper wire, and other designated materials in accordance with prescribed procedures. Maintain the crush pad work area to minimize equipment downtime, harvest cores, and ensure environmental compliance.
  • Dismantle engines and transmissions, remove selected small cores, harvest wire, sort commodity materials, and perform other related duties in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Operate the tire machine to separate rubber tires from wheels, remove weights and valve stems, sort tires by category, and prepare rims for shipment.
  • Collect and harvest dismantled core materials, remove debris, and proactively identify and address safety hazards within the customer area. Perform other duties in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Assist customers in a courteous and professional manner as needed. Prepare Gaylord boxes and pallets for shipment, complete regulatory and tracking logs, maintain and replace stormwater control devices, and assist in the inspection and upkeep of mechanical equipment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job Conditions
The General Laborer I works in outdoor environments within an auto salvage yard setting, with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, automotive fluids, and noise from machinery and customer activity. A variable schedule including weekends, holidays, and peak sale days is required, along with adherence to safety protocols and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Qualifications
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, including the comprehension of basic safety messages, labels, and hazard communications such as waste oil, gasoline, and flammable materials.
  • Ability to work required hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively in a variety of outdoor weather conditions, including rain, snow, extreme heat, and cold, for the duration of a full shift.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in automotive repair, vehicle dismantling, or the operation of tools and machinery, as well as familiarity with automotive parts and/or working with retail customers.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, and stretch regularly throughout the assigned work shift to perform customer care, production, and environmental and safety functions. Manual dexterity is required to handle tools, operate equipment, and maintain facility cleanliness through tasks such as mopping and sweeping. The ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds is regularly required to perform routine functions. Sufficient vision to safely perform all job functions as described is also required.
