A Per Diem Medical Coding job is a flexible, as-needed position where a medical coder reviews and assigns standardized codes to diagnoses and procedures for billing and documentation purposes. These roles often support healthcare facilities during peak periods, staffing shortages, or special projects. Per diem coders typically work remotely or on-site, depending on the employer's needs. This position is ideal for experienced coders seeking flexibility without a full-time commitment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in per diem medical coding?

To thrive as a Per Diem Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare coding systems, often supported by completion of a coding program and certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as electronic health records (EHR) platforms, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are key soft skills for success in per diem roles. These skills ensure codes are entered accurately and efficiently, supporting correct billing and compliance in healthcare organizations.

What are the typical work schedules and expectations for per diem medical coding roles?

Per diem medical coding positions offer flexible schedules that can vary depending on the employer's needs and your availability. You may be expected to meet productivity and accuracy standards similar to full-time staff, and the ability to quickly adapt to new workflows or documentation systems is important. While most of the work is independent, you may collaborate with healthcare providers or other coders to clarify documentation or resolve discrepancies.

Job Description
The per-diem role is primarily used to fill open shifts when our full time officers take time off for one reason or another. We are strictly interested in candidates who have a considerable amount of time in their schedules.
Listed below are some of the conditions we look to meet when hiring someone as a per-diem officer. If you feel you can meet most of these requirements, you would be a great candidate for the position.
Thanks again for your interest!
Per-Diem Officer Requirements:
Must be available to work all shifts:
Day: 06:30 - 15:00
Evening: 14:30 - 23:00
Night: 22:30 - 07:00
*Some variable shifts may also arise
  • Weekend availability is required
  • We're seeking individuals with flexible schedules
  • While we understand per-diem officers may not be available every time we reach out, we do expect consistent availability and willingness to cover shifts when possible
  • Supervisors will contact you via call or text when shifts open up; a prompt response (yes or no) is appreciated
  • Work hours are not guaranteed and can vary significantly. You may be asked to cover a full week during staff absences, or go several days without being scheduled
  • Summer months tend to offer more hours, while winter availability may decrease due to fewer vacation requests

NEW increased hourly wage, based on experience. In addition to the hourly rate of pay, there is a $1.60 to $7.60 differential depending on shift.
Are you someone who has a lot of free time on their hands and willing to work any shift?
If so, the UVM Medical Center seeks qualified individuals to join the Security team on a per diem basis. This position has no committed schedule/hours and is not benefit eligible. This position calls for someone who has some experience in Security, preferably in a healthcare setting, and has flexibility to fulfill hours, as needed, by the team. The per diem Security Officer covers both planned absences (staff vacation, holiday) and unanticipated absences. Ideal candidates are those looking to continue to be of service in a healthcare/hospital setting. Successful per diem Security Officers are those seeking to augment a part time work schedule, or students who can pick up shifts around class schedules (or on school breaks), or full/partial retirees who would like to continue to work when the opportunity aligns with their schedule.
Each Security Officer is assigned to a specific UVM Medical Center campus. The primary responsibilities of the Security Officer are to conduct patrol duties, respond immediately to calls for assistance, and document services provided on each shift. The Security Officer is expected to act in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
EDUCATION:
High School graduate or equivalent. Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
EXPERIENCE:
Prior security experience preferred. Previous experience in a healthcare setting a plus.
