A Pediatric Project Manager oversees and coordinates projects related to pediatric healthcare, such as clinical trials, research studies, or healthcare initiatives focused on children. Their responsibilities include planning project timelines, managing budgets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and communicating with multidisciplinary teams. They play a crucial role in making sure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet the specific needs of pediatric patients. Additionally, they act as a liaison between stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, researchers, and sponsors.

How does a Pediatric Project Manager typically coordinate with clinical and non-clinical teams during a clinical trial?

A Pediatric Project Manager works closely with both clinical teams (such as physicians, nurses, and research coordinators) and non-clinical teams (including regulatory affairs, data management, and finance) to ensure pediatric clinical trials run smoothly. Coordination involves regular meetings, clear communication of project milestones, and proactive identification of challenges unique to pediatric populations, such as obtaining parental consent or managing age-specific protocols. Effective collaboration and strong organizational skills are essential for aligning all stakeholders and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pediatric Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pediatric Project Manager, you need expertise in project management methodologies, a background in healthcare or pediatric services, and typically a relevant degree such as in healthcare administration or a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help manage cross-functional teams and engage effectively with stakeholders including clinicians and families. These skills ensure pediatric projects are delivered on time, within scope, and with the highest standards of care for young patients.

  • Drives cross-functional alignment by partnering with business and technical leaders to clarify outcomes, roles, decision-making, and ways of working; facilitates timely decisions and issue resolution.
  • Establishes and oversees project governance, including charters, stage gates, risk and issue management, change control, and executive reporting to ensure transparency and accountability.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex initiatives from concept through delivery, including defining scope, building integrated plans, managing dependencies, and driving adoption/change across diverse teams.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and/or a strategic portfolio, with the ability to prioritize, negotiate tradeoffs, and deliver outcomes in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong risk and issue management skills, including comfort operating with discretion and sound judgment in complex, high-visibility, and/or regulated environments.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred (or demonstrated equivalent mastery of project management standards and practices).
  • PMO experience, including building/using governance, templates, stage gates, and portfolio reporting to improve delivery consistency and transparency.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering multi-year programs and large-scale initiatives with significant change management and cross-organizational dependencies.
  • Experience managing vendors and external partners (contracts, statements of work, deliverables, performance), as applicable to project delivery.
  • Advanced proficiency with project/portfolio tools (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet, Jira, Azure DevOps, ServiceNow PPM, or similar) and strong analytical skills for schedule/financial/status reporting.
