Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Managing all aspects of litigation, including directing outside counsel for matters including:
    • High exposure litigation
    • Commercial disputes
    • Regulatory agency disputes
    • Corporate litigation
    • Accident litigation
    • Employment litigation, including EEOC charges
  • Coordinating responses to discovery requests, including e-discovery
  • Establishing, overseeing and coordinating the company's policies for record retention, e-discovery and service of process intake system
  • Establishing and overseeing the operation of the company's case management and litigation tracking systems
  • Managing all aspects of regulatory reviews of the company's business
  • Analyzing the root causes of litigation and devising litigation prevention strategies
  • Handling various requests for legal advice and related assistance, including presentations to the business on litigation and legal issues
  • Liaising with operations, transaction and compliance attorneys on litigation prevention
  • Formulating early resolution strategies
  • Representing the company at mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, key depositions and court appearances
  • Providing and ensuring legal risk management for the company including initiation and steering of all activities appropriate for minimizing of legal risks for the company
  • Ensuring defense of as well as enforcement of the company claims against 3rd parties in all legal issues in accordance with the company's policies
  • Assisting with the selection of and management of outside counsel

Advising on other matters as follows:
  • Reviewing contracts with customers, suppliers and others
  • Recommending contract language to minimize risk and avoid litigation
  • Assisting with the creation and review of company policies
  • Providing training on legal and compliance matters to company personnel
  • Providing other counsel and advice on legal matters that the Chief Legal Officer may assign from time to time
  • Interaction with executives and the board on both the status of litigation and litigation prevention

Qualifications
  • Degree from an accredited law school
  • At least 8 years of complex commercial litigation experience; prior in-house litigation experience strongly preferred
  • First chair trial experience
  • Collaborative personality
  • Comfortable working with executive management on litigation strategy
  • Ability to adapt to change and work in a fluid environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization and external parties
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines

The expected starting pay range for this role is $256,000 - $320,000 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern's compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels. We also provide a comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, life insurance, voluntary benefits, family care benefits, employee assistance program, paid time off and bonding leave, paid holidays, 401(k)/RRSP retirement savings plan with employer contribution, and employee referral bonuses.
