Job Description:
The Patient Assistance Specialist will provide drug assistance for uninsured and underinsured patients presenting a financial need. Records and maintains comprehensive documentation of patient enrollment and billing activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide financial counseling services and financial assistance for uninsured and underinsured patients presenting a financial need by phone or in person.
  • Initiates enrollment of patients in assistance programs for assigned clinics.
  • Works with clinic staff to gather necessary information for patient enrollment.
  • Obtain patient information and signatures on patient assistance program applications and route timely for optimal financial turnaround.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of drug enrollment status and determinations and outcomes via verbal and written communication.
  • Responsible for ordering drug according to patient assistance program guidelines and monitoring drug stock by utilizing packing slips, drug management system report and Practice Management System for dose tracking.
  • Properly documents patient enrollment and account activity in Practice Management System and EMR.
  • Completes daily evaluation of follow-up activity, utilizing follow-up date to prioritize workload.
  • Responds to incoming telephone or mail inquiries in a prompt, timely manner.
  • Work pending issues daily to resolve outstanding issues and notify Manager of any unusual accounts as they become delinquent or are in question.
  • Assist Patient Accounting with any patient assistance needs.
  • Follows Tennessee Oncology Patient Assistance Policy & Procedure parameters as outlined by management to ensure standardization of function.
  • Keeps current on all pharmaceutical and patient assistance programs including community resources to ensure maximum utilization of program(s).
  • Refer patients as appropriate to outside social services organizations.
  • Perform additional duties as needed for special projects when assigned by management.
  • Assist with team coverage as needed when assigned by management.
  • Maintains a complete understanding of HCPCS/ICD/CPT oncology coding.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of government and managed care benefit structures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and establish collaborative relationships with physicians, patients, clinical and administrative staff, and the public.
  • Excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of clinic office procedures, medical practice and medical terminology.
  • Ability to recognize, evaluate and solve problems.
  • Exceptional multi-tasking, organizational skills and superb attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proficient in the use of end-user computer applications regarding productivity (MS Word, Excel, Outlook), database and patient scheduling and other medical information systems.
  • Ability to operate various types of office equipment.
  • Must possess high degree of professionalism and adaptability.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of experience in directly related role

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be willing and able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to satellite clinics when necessary.
