What is the difference between Partner vs Associate?
| Aspect | Partner | Associate |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires extensive experience, industry reputation, and sometimes ownership interest | Usually requires a relevant degree and entry-level to mid-level experience |
| Work Environment | High-level strategic decision-making, client management, leadership | Day-to-day project work, research, supporting senior staff |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Law firms, consulting firms, accounting firms, investment firms | Same industries, often as entry to mid-level roles |
The main difference between a Partner and an Associate lies in experience, responsibilities, and level of seniority. Partners are senior leaders involved in strategic decisions and client relationships, while Associates support these efforts through research and project execution. Understanding these distinctions helps clarify career progression within professional service firms.

Job description
Description
Westwood is seeking to hire a Human Resources Business Partner in our Kansas City office. The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) partners with leaders across the supported Division(s) to align people strategies with business and project objectives. This role supports a highly project-driven, multi-disciplinary workforce, including corporate, technical, and field-based employees. The HRBP serves as a trusted advisor to leaders, providing guidance on workforce planning, employee relations, talent management, and compliance while supporting operational excellence, safety, and a strong project delivery culture.
Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Partnership
- Serve as a strategic HR partner to Division leaders - someone who understands the business, not just HR policy.
- Align workforce and talent strategies with project pipelines, backlog, and resource demands.
- Support organizational design and staffing models to meet fluctuating project needs and utilization targets.
- Partner with leaders on change initiatives related to growth, restructuring, acquisitions, or new project delivery models.
Project-Based Workforce & Talent Management
- Support workforce planning across multiple locations.
- Work closely with Talent Acquisition on recruiting hard-to-fill technical, professional, and skilled trade roles.
- Help leaders identify and develop their next generation of technical experts, PMs, and field leaders.
- Support career pathing and development for technical and project-based roles.
Employee Relations & Performance Management
- Coach managers on giving feedback, managing performance, and holding people accountable in a way that works in a project-driven environment.
- Handle complex employee relations issues involving field and office employees, including investigations and corrective action.
- Support performance planning and goal setting, aligned to project outcomes, safety, and quality.
Compliance, Labor & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws across multiple jurisdictions.
- Support compliance related to prevailing wage, certified payroll, and project-specific labor requirements.
- Partner with Safety, Legal, and operations to address workforce risk, employee conduct, and jobsite concerns.
- Interpret and apply HR policies consistently across office and field environments.
Compensation, Benefits & Total Rewards
- Advise leaders on compensation practices for professional, technical, and field roles.
- Support job evaluations, pay structures, and market competitiveness.
- Assist with annual merit, bonus, and performance-based compensation cycles.
Culture, Engagement & Safety
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement across project teams.
- Support employee engagement initiatives and action planning, with consideration for dispersed and field-based teams.
- Champion the organization's commitment to One Team in your day-to-day work.
This is an onsite position, with regular interaction with field or project teams. Periodic travel to project sites or regional offices may be required.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably supporting project-based or operational teams.
- Strong knowledge of employment law, employee relations, and HR best practices.
- Experience partnering with leaders in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, or a related professional services environment.
- HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP).
- Experience supporting multi-state operations, field-based employees, or union environments.
- Familiarity with utilization models, billable workforces, or project financial drivers.
Competencies Required:
- Responds constructively to changing conditions, recovers from setbacks quickly, and maintains effectiveness under pressure.
- Approaches complex problems analytically, balances competing priorities, and makes sound, timely decisions under uncertainty.
- Communicates clearly in written, verbal, and visual formats; create and interpret content effectively for any audience.
- Builds trusted, long-term relationships with both technical staff and leadership, by serving as a reliable advisor who anticipates needs and exceeds expectations
- Upholds the highest standards of integrity, professional conduct, and ethical behavior in all interactions.
