The Position
Helix Water District is seeking a part-time Public Affairs Education Assistant to help bring our water education programs to life. You'll lead interactive classroom presentations and guide elementary school students through engaging tours of our R.M. Levy Water Treatment Plant. With a schedule that follows the academic year, you will enjoy summers and holidays off. If you are enthusiastic, creative, and excited to inspire young learners, we'd love to have you on our team!
The Details:
  • SCHEDULE: Our ideal candidate will be available to work Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., with occasional work on Saturdays, for a total 8-16 hours per week. Schedule varies depending on tour schedules and administrative needs of the district. Variances are communicated well in advance.
  • SALARY: $21.00 - $30.00/hour, DOQ. Part-time positions are limited to 950 hours per fiscal year. (July 1 - June 30)
  • WORK LOCATION: This position is based out of our Administration Office in La Mesa, CA.
  • BENEFITS: Part-time employees receive 40 hours of paid sick leave once they reach their 90th day of employment. (Part-time employees do not receive medical benefits)

Overview of Responsibilities
Our Public Affairs Education Assistant will perform a variety of administrative and educational functions. Our ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills to coordinate with teachers, school administrators and members of the public. You will need to clearly convey information about educational programs, schedule tours and present complex water-related topics in an engaging, age-appropriate and understandable way.
Our Public Affairs Education Assistant will have a genuine interest in education and connecting with the community, which will help you create engaging experiences that spark curiosity and enthusiasm in students. Your enthusiasm will make presentations and tours more impactful, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of water treatment, distribution and the water cycle among students and the broader community. Leading tours and conducting classroom presentations requires confidence and clarity in public speaking. You will need to deliver scripted information effectively, engage with your audience and handle questions with ease.
Creativity is not the only aspect of this position. We need someone who is an organizational expert. Managing schedules, tracking program participation and processing invoices requires strong organizational abilities. You will need to keep everything running smoothly and ensure that all administrative tasks are completed accurately and on time.

Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of two years of experience teaching, training, leading tours or giving presentations and a valid California Class C driver's license. Experience working with elementary school students and science education is preferred.
Ideal candidates will:
  • Be responsible and enthusiastic. They will have the ability to communicate and present information effectively, while also being able to effectively comprehend, interpret and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Possess computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office, and the ability to plan, coordinate, and organize work to meet deadlines.
  • Able to reach and lift items up to 25 lbs., the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, and traverse stairs.
  • Ability to perform job duties in a variety of weather conditions. A portion of the tours are located outdoors.
