To thrive as a Part Time Payroll Specialist, you need a solid understanding of payroll processes, accounting principles, and relevant labor laws, often backed by experience or coursework in finance or accounting. Familiarity with payroll software such as ADP, QuickBooks, or Paychex, and proficiency in Excel are typically required. Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and effective communication skills help ensure accuracy and trustworthiness in handling sensitive employee information. These skills are essential for timely and accurate payroll processing, legal compliance, and maintaining employee satisfaction.

What is a part time payroll job?

Part time payroll jobs involve processing employee payments, calculating hours worked, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations for organizations, but on a reduced or flexible schedule. These roles often include tasks like updating payroll records, distributing paychecks, and handling payroll queries from employees. Part time payroll professionals may work in-house for a company or through a third-party payroll service provider. The job typically requires attention to detail, confidentiality, and familiarity with payroll software. It's a good fit for those seeking flexible hours while still performing important administrative duties.

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit for their needs.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time payroll professionals, and how can they be managed?

Part-time payroll professionals often manage tight deadlines and must quickly adapt to changing payroll regulations while balancing a part-time schedule. One common challenge is ensuring accuracy and compliance with limited hours, which requires excellent time management and attention to detail. Collaborating closely with HR and accounting departments is essential to resolve discrepancies and maintain smooth payroll operations. Staying organized, leveraging payroll software, and maintaining clear communication with team members can help address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Part-Time Payroll Accountant

  • Salary: $29–$36/hour, depending on experience
  • Location: McLean, VA
  • Office Situation: 100% in-office | Permanent part-time | Approximately 20–24 hours per week

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

If you know payroll inside and out but don't want a traditional 40-hour workweek, this is a rare opportunity to take real ownership of payroll while maintaining a part-time schedule.

Our client, an established organization in the real estate industry, is seeking a Part-Time Payroll Accountant to own full-cycle payroll and the related accounting and reconciliation processes.

  • Permanent part-time opportunity with approximately 20–24 hours per week.
  • Flexible scheduling options, including three longer days or shorter days throughout the week, with flexibility needed around payroll processing dates.
  • True payroll ownership. You won't be responsible for just one piece of the process.
  • Work directly with HR and Accounting and become the go-to resource for payroll.
  • Opportunity to use your payroll knowledge, accounting skills, and problem-solving ability rather than simply processing transactions.
  • Established organization with a long-standing presence in the real estate industry.
  • 401(k) eligibility for this part-time position.
  • Excellent fit for an experienced payroll professional who wants to continue doing meaningful work without committing to a full-time schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own full-cycle, semi-monthly payroll for two employee populations.
  • Process payroll changes, deductions, bonuses, overtime and other payroll activity.
  • Submit payroll through ADP and review payroll reports for accuracy.
  • Prepare and maintain internal payroll accounting schedules and spreadsheets.
  • Prepare payroll and benefit journal entries and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Reconcile payroll, benefit and insurance accounts and investigate discrepancies.
  • Review and reconcile quarterly payroll tax filings, including 941s, and support year-end payroll reporting.
  • Maintain 401(k)/Safe Harbor contribution calculations and reconciliations.
  • Prepare payroll-related check requests, reports and accounting schedules.
  • Research payroll discrepancies and resolve issues through completion.
  • Support month-end, year-end and payroll-related reporting projects.

Qualifications

  • Recent, hands-on full-cycle payroll experience with direct responsibility for the payroll process from beginning to end.
  • Experience with payroll accounting and reconciliations, including payroll-to-GL and related account reconciliations.
  • Working knowledge of payroll taxes, 941s, W-2/W-3 reporting, deductions and taxable/non-taxable payroll items.
  • Ability to research and resolve payroll and reconciliation discrepancies independently.
  • Comfortable working with both payroll systems and hands-on/manual reconciliation processes.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Apply today. Interviews are underway, and our client is looking to identify the right Part-Time Payroll Accountant quickly.
