What does a Part Time Network Firewall Engineer do?

A Part Time Network Firewall Engineer is responsible for configuring, managing, and monitoring firewalls to ensure the security of an organization's network on a part-time basis. They assess network traffic, implement firewall policies, troubleshoot security issues, and respond to potential threats. This role often involves working with IT staff to maintain compliance with security standards and may include providing recommendations for network improvements.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A senior network firewall engineer with extensive experience, specialized skills, and relevant certifications can potentially earn $500,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large organizations. Such roles often require advanced knowledge of security protocols, firewall management, and network architecture, along with leadership responsibilities or consulting work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Network Firewall Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Network Firewall Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, firewall configuration, and cybersecurity principles, often backed by a degree in information technology or a related field. Familiarity with firewall platforms like Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, or Fortinet, as well as certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or Cisco CCNP Security, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with team members. These skills are crucial for maintaining network security, ensuring uptime, and protecting organizational assets from cyber threats.

Are firewall engineers in demand?

Is AI going to replace network engineers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace network engineers, including those working as part-time firewall engineers, because their roles require complex problem-solving, configuration, and security management that currently depend on human expertise. AI tools can assist with routine tasks and data analysis, but human oversight remains essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure networks. Continuous learning and certification in networking and security are important for adapting to technological advancements.

What is the difference between Part Time Network Firewall Engineer vs Network Security Technician?

AspectPart Time Network Firewall EngineerNetwork Security Technician
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Security+CCNA, CompTIA Security+
Work EnvironmentIT departments, consulting firms, remote or onsiteIT support teams, security operations centers, onsite or remote
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, financial institutions, government agenciesCorporate IT, managed security service providers, government

Both roles focus on network security, requiring similar certifications and working in comparable environments. The main difference is that a Network Security Technician often handles broader security tasks, while a Part Time Network Firewall Engineer specializes specifically in firewall configuration and management, typically on a part-time basis.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time Network Firewall Engineers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Part-time Network Firewall Engineers often face the challenge of balancing critical security updates and incident response within limited working hours. They must prioritize tasks effectively, ensuring that firewall rules and configurations are up-to-date while remaining available for urgent troubleshooting. Collaboration with full-time IT staff and clear documentation are essential for smooth hand-offs and continuity. Leveraging automation tools can also help manage recurring tasks, reducing manual workload and minimizing the risk of oversight.

What is the salary of a firewall engineer?

The salary of a part-time network firewall engineer typically ranges from $30,000 to $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Entry-level positions may pay less, while experienced engineers with certifications like CISSP or Cisco CCNP can earn higher wages. Compensation often reflects the complexity of network security tasks and the tools used.

The Opportunity:
A well-designed network is critical to move data and enable the U.S. government to achieve their mission, but how can an organization make sure their network will fit their current and evolving needs? You'll then lead the planning of acquisition, installation, configuration, and maintenance of the network and security components. From resolving interoperability issues across platforms to supporting the acquisition of hardware, you'll put your hardware and software talents to good use. This is your chance to support your team with growing their knowledge base within depth network security expertise while broadening the scope of your network engineering work. Join us as we help protect DoD critical missions.

  • Experience managing multi-device environments through Panorama, including device groups, templates, and policy push workflows
  • Knowledge of VPC architecture, Transit Gateway, AWS Network Firewall, Security Groups, NACLs, and deploying Palo Alto VM-Series or Cloud NGFW in AWS
  • Knowledge of BGP, OSPF, static routing, NAT, and IPsec or SSL VPN as they apply to firewall design
  • Ability to own firewall incidents end-to-end, including participating in on-call rotations, triaging network security events, and driving issues to resolution under pressure
  • Ability to diagnose connectivity and policy issues using packet captures, traffic logs, and CLI tooling across both physical and cloud-based firewalls
  • Ability to mentor junior and mid-level engineers and take ownership of smaller scoped projects and workstreams
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • HS diploma or GED

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience deploying firewall configs or AWS networking resources via Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation
  • Experience designing or operating a ZTNA model, including using Prisma Access or similar

  • Experience with Azure or GCP networking in addition to AWS
  • Experience with SIEM or monitoring, including forwarding PAN logs to Splunk, Cortex XSIAM, or similar and building alerting around firewall events
