Job Description
Summary:
Performs a wide range of duties involved with preparing and serving foods and beverages in one or more areas of our food service operation. Prepares salads, hot foods, and cold foods, serves foods from counters or steam tables and serves as a cashier.
Essential functions
โ€ข Performs cashiering duties as required
โ€ข Follows prescribed menu in setting up hot and cold food lines; chooses proper utensils and sets steam line to appropriate temperature for menu items; checks food temperatures and prepares service areas prior to service; may operate service area cooking equipment as assigned
โ€ข Conveys food and supplies from main kitchen to serving site either by carrying or by utilizing a manual cart
โ€ข Prepares hot and cold meat and vegetables dishes, soups, sauces, beverages, salads, sandwiches, pie fillings, baked goods, desserts, salad dressings, and similar food items
โ€ข Serves a range of hot and cold food items from counters and steam tables; adds relishes and garnishes according to instructions; ensures that appropriate portions are served
โ€ข Replenishes foods, silverware, glassware, dishes, and trays at serving stations, orders and replenishes condiments
โ€ข Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; assesses inventory needs and prepares appropriate orders for purveyors
โ€ข Provides training to students performing related work enrolled in a culinary program
โ€ข Services customers and interacts with employees with a pleasant, patient and friendly attitude.
Competencies
โ€ข Excellent customer service: Be consistently courteous and helpful to customers, acknowledge regular customers, work to resolve issues quickly even when it requires extra work and being positive and friendly even in difficult situations.
โ€ข Cash management: Demonstrate ability to operate Point-of-Sale (POS) system, perform basic math, accurately count back change to cash customers, balance cash drawer and all handle transactions accurately and thoroughly.

Work environment
The Food Service Worker typically works in a kitchen, dining and/or classroom environment, but the mission of the school may require work in other workplaces. This position may require evening and/or weekend hours to accommodate activities such as Board meetings and representation of Great Plains at public events.
Duties involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety and sanitation precautions.
Physical demands
While performing the duties of this position, the food service worker is constantly required move/position objects up to 35 pounds, move about their work area, building and/or across campus. The food service worker will stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time throughout the entire work shift.
Travel required
Occasional travel within and outside of the Great Plains Technology Center district may be required.
Required education and experience
โ€ข High school diploma or equivalency
โ€ข Food Handler's permit
Preferred education and experience
โ€ข Prior food service experience such as fast food, prep work, food handling, and cashier
