The Part-Time Fire Instructor supports Fire and Rescue training programs by providing direct instruction, conducting skills demonstrations, and evaluating students in accordance with program standards and accreditation requirements. The instructor will also assist in maintaining training equipment and props, ensuring a safe learning environment, and supporting the overall operation of Fire and Emergency Services training. This position reports directly to the Program Director.
Duties/Functions
Instructional Duties
  • Deliver classroom, hands-on, and scenario-based instruction in fire service topics.
  • Demonstrate proper use of fire apparatus, tools, SCBA, ladders, and other firefighting equipment.
  • Evaluate student performance in drills, exercises, and written/practical examinations.
  • Ensure training complies with applicable NFPA, OSFM, and program standards.
  • Provide mentorship and feedback to students to support skill development and professional growth.

Equipment & Prop Support
  • Assist with setting up, staging, and resetting training props and evolutions.
  • Conduct pre- and post-use checks of equipment, reporting any damage or safety issues.
  • Help maintain training props, including preparing consumable materials (e.g., wood, fuel, etc.).

Administrative Support
  • Document student attendance, participation, and performance.
  • Assist with recordkeeping of training activities, equipment usage, and safety logs.
  • Support the preparation of instructional materials and course documentation.

Program & College Engagement
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors to ensure consistency in training delivery.
  • Participate in staff meetings, safety briefings, and professional development as required.
  • Represent the College and Fire Program with professionalism, responsibility, and adaptability.

  • Balancing instructional duties with equipment and safety oversight.
  • Adapting to varying student experience levels and learning needs.
  • Ensuring training realism while maintaining a safe environment.

Associate Degree in Fire Protection, Emergency Services, or related field
Experience Required
  • Three - Five years of fire service experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry systems

Experience Preferred
  • Experience in an educational or public safety environment
  • Familiarity with community college systems and procedures
