Title: Highway Maintenance Mechanic I (Sign Fabrication / Installations Department)

Description of Duties
This is a lead field position located at the Department of Transportation responsible for leading and participating in assigned highway, bridge and culvert maintenance and repair projects such as road and storm sewer maintenance and repairs, sign and pavement marking installations, and sign fabrication. Duties include the performance of the more skilled construction and mechanical work tasks and operates standard construction equipment under a variety of weather conditions and temperature extremes, and various work schedules. This position is distinguished from Highway Maintenance Mechanic II by virtue of having responsibility for crew leadership, performing higher skill level tasks such as operation of excavators and graders, and office responsibilities. This position is distinguished from Senior Highway Maintenance Mechanic by its focus on single crew leadership and single job site activity versus leading multiple crews. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Senior Highway Maintenance Mechanic or other higher-level staff member. Lead supervision is exercised over a work crew in one of the fields mentioned above. Employees are required to move material weighing in excess of fifty (50) pounds. Does related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in maintenance, repair, or construction involving a combination of two (2) or more of the following skilled trades: masonry, carpentry, pipe installation, asphalt paving, welding, metal fabrication, pavement marking installation, and sign installation.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
Possession of a valid New York State Class *B* Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Candidates for employment with Monroe County Government will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, including marijuana for positions requiring a commercial driver's license (CDL). Failure to meet the standards may result in disqualification.
