The expected hiring range for this position is:

$99,500.00-$130,900.00.

About the Role:

Fermilab is seeking a Senior Construction Coordinator to independently coordinate, inspect, and oversee all aspects of complex construction projects including the installed systems, safety management systems, quality assurance and controls systems, project schedules and costs. You will inspect construction work in progress to ensure that materials and work standards conform to specifications, quality requirements of the contract and applicable construction codes.

What your day-to-day as a Senior Construction Coordinator at Fermilab will look like:

  • Creating full work submission packages for procurement execution and developing, and creating plans and specifications, recommending revisions where appropriate prior to invitations for bids.
  • Serving as a Fermilab Task Manager and Construction Coordinator (TM/CC), planning and supervising work for subcontractor workers for various work disciplines such as pipefitting, electrical, general construction, excavation, and HVAC.
  • May supervise and mentor and other developing Task Managers and Construction Coordinators (TM/CC's) on work execution as needed.
  • Acquiring or facilitating the procurement of required materials, formulating comprehensive cost estimates, and initiating the renewal or establishment of new construction and service subcontract.
  • Interacting with project management, determining specifications for task to be completed. Determining the labor requirements associated with the task. Obtaining, or arranging for procurement of, associated material. Providing documentation describing on-going and completed work. Meeting with stakeholders and work disciplines.
  • Scrutinizing ongoing construction activities to ensure alignment with contract specifications, relevant construction codes, ES&H Plans, applicable OSHA Standards, and hazard analyses, overseeing materials, equipment, work standards, schedules, safety, environmental protection, and quality requirements.
  • Preparing independent cost estimates, verifying subcontractor charges for work segments completed, verifying progress payment invoices, and performing final acceptance inspections.
  • Reviewing and negotiating variations from the plans and specifications requested by the subcontractor, and either authorizing such variations or referring them to the project management when changes substantially affect project design, engineering requirements, or cost.
  • Monitoring and tracking work progress to project schedules and resolving subcontractor scheduling problems, if necessary.
  • Coordinating construction activities with ongoing Laboratory operations including mobilization and setting up construction equipment and processes, utility service interruptions, traffic control, and Laboratory provided services and equipment.
  • Overseeing subcontractors' activities to ensure compliance of their Environmental, Safety, & Health (ES&H) plans, applicable Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Standards, equipment manufacturers' specifications, and applicable hazard analysis.
  • Overseeing subcontractors' planning and quality control processes including preliminary job site discussions and final acceptance inspections.
  • Preparing and issuing disciplinary correspondence for actions or issues non-compliant with applicable codes and standards specific to technical specifications, ES&H programs, and Quality Control activities.
  • Issuing reports to project management on construction concerns and work progress and ensuring that proper documentation is maintained.
  • May participate in all personnel actions for direct reports including hiring, performance reviews, salary actions, discipline, and terminations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.


Essential Competencies and Attributes for Success:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in related field with a minimum of 10+ years of heavy industrial/commercial experience
  • OR bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, engineering technology, or related field with a minimum of 5+ years of heavy industrial/commercial experience.


Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Thorough knowledge of construction disciplines, including excavations, conventional construction, electrical, mechanical, and building automation is desired.
