About the Opportunity

This is an open position at Eastlake Plant (Synchronous Condenser Specialist B), FirstEnergy Service Co, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

All employees who apply for a posted position must notify their supervisors that they have applied.  Employees who have not been in their current positions for at least one year or who are in a position with specific requirements beyond one year, must obtain approval from their supervisor before applying.

Job Responsibilities

Under directive supervision, assists employees of higher classification in the operation of, and performs maintenance on: synchronous condensers, combustion turbines, fuel ceils, generators, and their auxiliary and associated equipment.

Under general directive supervision, once qualified, performs the duties listed:

Assists employees of same or higher classification in performing operational functions. Carries out instructions of the Plant Supervisor or Synchronous Condenser Specialist (SCS).

  • Performs work or assists SCS(s) to assure efficient, dependable operating conditions of synchronous condensers, combustion turbines, fuel cells, generators, and their auxiliary and associated equipment.
  • Operates and maintains Plant Equipment Associated with the operation of the facility.  National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) Equipment.
  • Checks with other SCSB(s) and SCS(s) being relieved, for special orders and operating conditions; performs an initial check of operations and conditions of equipment when commencing duties.
  • Records meter and instrument indications; logs all equipment trouble, and equipment operating problems and records times for starting and stopping various equipment, etc. as well as reports any and all abnormalities to Plant Supervisor and I or SCS.
  • Maintains water and air discharges within regulatory compliance.
  • Participates in removing and tagging of equipment from service for inspection and maintenance work; removes tags from equipment and clears upon completion of work; ensures that equipment and operating conditions are returned to normal.
  • In accordance with the switching authority's orders or established procedures and Company practices, performs various switching operations, which are necessary to complete assigned construction and / or maintenance activities, reports to switching authority any unusual or abnormal conditions.
  • Performs sampling, testing, analyzing and adding proper treatment to NPDES and plant discharge water using prescribed operating procedures and practices to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Performs duties such as operating primary electrical switchgear, switch houses, transmission yards and recording routine and special readings. Inspects or checks all circuit loads, and voltages, counter readings, equipment temperatures and ground detectors and using portable instruments such as meggers, digital multimeters, voltmeters, var meters, watt meters, and tong testers when required. Maintains correct voltages on batteries, takes and records temperature and gravity reading and maintains battery cells when necessary.
  • Performs minor mechanical and electrical repair and preventative work on plant equipment such as: synchronous condensers, combustion turbines, fuel cells, generators, and their auxiliary and associated equipment, non-code welding, sheet metal work, and pipe fitting
  • Performs maintenance and repair of plant equipment such as: replacing worn brushes on rotating equipment, blowing out switchboards and other electrical equipment, cleaning switchboards, meters, potheads, and other electrical equipment. Assists SCS's in inspecting, repairing and overhauling electrical equipment.
  • Performs, directs, or assists in the performance of any task assigned for continuity or restoration of service in an emergency.
  • Makes repairs or assists in the installation of lighting circuits, busses, plant wiring including auxiliary supply; the installation, repair and / or replacing of instrument control and signal wiring
  • Sets up and removes rigging, tackle, blocking, shoring and scaffolds and operates overhead and mobile cranes in non-critical lifts.
  • Operates and maintains basic and electrical hand tools and extension cords.
  • Follows orders, procedures, and practices; safe-guards employees and others at work; inspects, maintains, and operates company fire-fighting apparatus; administers first aid; maintains a high standard of housekeeping
  • Participates in incipient fire fighting.
  • Cleans and paints equipment and structures.
  • Performs other work, as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must possess a two-year technical or applied science degree, applicable to the work, from an accredited college or university
  • In lieu of the degree, three years related experience in a power producing utility or other process-related industry, including, but not limited to: paper mill industry, airline industry, chemical and petro-chemical industries, equivalent military experience, applicable to the work discipline, from any branch of the United States Armed Services
  • Must be able to pass the Edison Electric Institute POSS/MASS test
  • Ability to pass respirator fit test
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver's license(s) required to do work.
  • Must be able to work in high places and in restricted or confined spaces
  • Must be able to perform a variety of operations and have an understanding of operational problems.
  • Must have the ability to receive and pass on orders and instructions, to those employees assisting in such a manner as to maintain harmony safety and cooperation.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts and overtime.
  • Must be able to acquire basic knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and operational systems for the plant.
  • Must have a working knowledge of applied electricity covering AC/DC circuits.
  • Must have a working knowledge of common safety practices and rules, regulations and procedures, and demonstrated proficiency of the same.
  • Must be willing to receive instructions, communicate effectively, and cooperate with fellow employees at all times in the performance of work.
  • Must be willing to acquire additional knowledge and skills required for performance of the duties of this position through attendance at specialized training classes and other means.
  • Must be able to train and direct others and receive and issue orders in a manner that will maintain harmony and safety.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete training courses as required by career path requirements and complete all TPE's required for SCS B.
  • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills to organize and present ideas, reports, and analyses accurately and effectively
