Job description


Provides direct supervision to 11-15 hourly employees on one of four eight-hour rotating shifts (southern swing). Plans and controls production performance as measured against key performance indicators. Ensures compliance to established safety rules/policies, customer quality specifications and production standards. Actively leads and participates in safety, housekeeping, continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives within the department. Works with employees to develop the necessary skills to perform job tasks as outlined in the work instructions. Identifies and solves operating problems. Participates in root cause failure analysis triggered by unplanned downtime events. Ensures completion of all required paperwork, schedules, work orders, timekeeping/payroll etc. Communicates departmental and mill wide performance against established goals, on a regular basis along with other key communications.

The Supervisor has the responsibility, authority and is accountable to make decisions regarding job assignments, work priorities, and overtime requirements.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs the day-to-day activities of the shift.
  • Responsible for the resolution of shift issues.
  • Ensures all schedules and releases are met.
  • Responsible for performance counseling of individuals for unacceptable performance relating to safety, quality, productivity and/or inappropriate behaviors to include disciplinary action if required.
  • Prepares and distributes shift report.
  • Conducts audits to ensure that safety, housekeeping, basic care rounds, and other job standards are followed.
  • Supports mill goals in safety, environmental compliance, quality, cost, productivity and continuous improvement.
  • Accountable for overall shift performance in accordance to established key performance indicators (KPI's) to include: safety, environmental, housekeeping, quality, cull and production efficiency. Takes necessary actions to ensure goals are achieved in a team environment by leading or promoting problem solving and development of countermeasures with or by crew members.
  • Completes all shift accident investigations within 24-hour period. Ensures corrective action is taken to address issue.
  • Provides daily communications to the shift.
  • Manages individual job assignments and training plan with assistance from other department personnel.
  • Responsible for the daily management of the time/attendance system.

Required Skills

  • The incumbent must provide strong leadership and teamwork to make a quality product while ensuring safe and efficient operations.
  • Must be able to work rotating shift schedule.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to influence people.
  • Good organization skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Able to motivate people to perform at a higher level.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • SAP experience a plus.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent work experience.
  • Three to five years previous supervisory skills preferred; preferably in a unionized manufacturing environment.
