Job description

The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.
Job Overview:
The Unit Secretary in the Labor and Delivery department assists the Director of Patient Care and the staff nurses by performing diversified secretarial duties. These duties include but are not limited to: filing, document storage and retrieval, reception, typing, routine record keeping, maintain supplies and equipment, maintaining monthly statistics.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred:
  • Computer Skills (ie: Word, Excel, Windows)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Previous unit secretary or medical office experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Scheduling Requirements:
  • Full Time
  • Day shift - 36 hours - 3/12 hour shifts
  • 7am - 7:30pm
  • Rotating weekends and holidays

Essential Functions:
  • Answer telephones properly and relays information to appropriate person
  • Assembles and disassembles designated charts appropriately
  • Assist nurses by picking up and delivering blood, blood derivatives, specimens, medications and charts as requested
  • Assists as directed with PI activities such as data collection
  • Demonstrates competency in Pain Management by reporting patient s pain intensity to staff nurse
  • Ensures a safe environment in aspects of care, equipment and treatment
  • Enters medical orders in Clinical Information System as per hospital policy
  • Identifies and reports potential and actual patient safety issues,
  • Keeps medical record complete and in order
  • Maintain unit supplies at appropriate par levels
  • Maintains communication with the Bed Controller and cooperates with room assignments
  • Notifies appropriate departments of patient expirations and attaches death certificate to medical record for attending MD signature
  • Notifies nurse upon arrival of an admission and calls attending physician if admission orders are needed
  • Direct admission, ensures all parts of patient records are properly identified by use of patient identification label
  • Participates in statusing nurse collected specimens and obtains transmittal slip from the printer to be placed on the specimen
  • Delivers specimens as needed,
  • Participates in unit-based patient satisfaction, Hourly rounding, assist patient as needed, water, get assistance, Greeting patients and family on admission
  • Answer call bells as needed, Patient call backs, Assist in discharge process
  • Performs environmental rounds on a weekly basis, including patient and non-patient areas
  • Performs required clerical work relating to the admission, transfer and discharge of a patient

  • Recognizes patients who may be experiencing pain and reports to the RN
  • Recognizes stat and rush Lab results and alerts the Nurse in charge,
  • Reviews charts for needed forms
  • Charts TPR, BP for their shift on graphic reports records
  • Attaches all diagnostic reports to chart
  • Reviews daily medical order sheets for x-ray, dates and enters properly x-ray prep and lab prep via Clinical Information Systems, as necessary,Secures needed unit services as directed by Director of Patient Care and/or Assistant Director of Patient Care
