What is operational resilience?

Operational resilience is the ability of an organization to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptions that could impact critical business operations and services. It involves identifying potential risks, implementing measures to prevent or minimize the impact of those risks, and ensuring that essential functions can continue during and after an incident. Operational resilience covers areas such as business continuity, disaster recovery, cybersecurity, and risk management, aiming to protect both the organization and its stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operational resilience professional?

To thrive as an Operational Resilience professional, you need a solid understanding of risk management, business continuity planning, regulatory compliance, and typically a degree in business, risk, or a related field. Familiarity with business continuity management software, risk assessment tools, and certifications such as ISO 22301 or CBCP are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and stakeholder management skills help you drive cross-functional initiatives and respond effectively to disruptions. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring organizations can anticipate, withstand, and quickly recover from operational disruptions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in operational resilience roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Operational Resilience roles often face challenges such as coordinating across multiple departments, adapting to rapidly evolving risks, and ensuring that business continuity plans remain current and effective. Addressing these challenges requires strong communication skills, regular scenario-based exercises, and ongoing collaboration with IT, risk management, and business units.
