Job Description
THE POSITION
The main responsibility of a fact checker/copy editor is to be the last line of defense against any errors in our articles. You're looking for inaccuracies and instilling trust in our readers by ensuring a bulletproof product. You don't have to be an expert of the facts in our stories themselves but you have the tools and know how to verify them.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fact check and copy edit all content for MagnifyMoney and LendingTree, including video, graphics, special reports, and written stories.
FACT-CHECKING
  • Determine what information needs to be fact checked-- from birth dates to quotes to ages and mathematical calculations
  • Follow-up with sources when necessary to verify personal or professional details about themselves that are cited in our story
    • ex: Are you Laurie Johnson from Tucson, Arizona and are you currently 30 years old? How do you spell your first and last name? Did you really pay down $25,000 worth of debt?
  • When a writer makes a calculation, double check their math.
  • When the team receives infographics, you will double check the text to be sure it matches the original source
  • Work with writers when necessary to verify facts

COPY EDITING:
  • You're a grammar hound and you have an eagle's eye for typos and other errors that can affect our credibility with readers.
  • You will copy edit regular articles as well as videos, infographics and basically anything with text that appears on our site

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of editing and fact checking experience, preferably on a copy edit desk
  • Must have a excellent attention to detail and work with writers to ensure that all information in stories is accurate.
  • At the end of the day, our ability to get it right is how we establish trust with our readers and we need a team player who understands the importance of accuracy
  • Must pass copy edit/fact check test
