What is an online accountant?

Online accountants do the same work as a regular accountant; the primary difference is they work from home or remotely from another location outside of the office. They compile and verify financial transactions and ensure that their clients' finances are in good shape and that they are compliant with lawful business practices. Online accountants have a wide range of job duties, depending on their specialty. Other responsibilities may include reviewing financial statements for quality assurance, documenting individual expenditures, and verifying transaction compliance. Some online accountants may make budget recommendations to increase the financial efficiency of their clients. During tax season, an online accountant prepares tax documents, calculates taxes owed, and follows up on payments made to or received from government agencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online accountant?

To thrive as an Online Accountant, you need a strong grasp of accounting principles, financial analysis, and a relevant degree such as a Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks Online or Xero, and often a CPA certification, is typically required.
