Position Overview

As a Transmission Engineering Substation Design Engineer at Oncor you’re responsible for planning and designing transmission facilities to expand and maintain a safe and reliable electric grid. Primary responsibilities include engineering design and project support responsibilities for transmission station design projects.

We are considering applicants with multiple experience levels and skills. Please see below for minimum experience requirements for each level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan, schedule, and provide construction management of the planned projects for the electric high voltage system capital projects, to ensure that sound engineering and Oncor standards are incorporated.
  • Produce engineering physical and electrical designs drawings, specifications, and bills of material for substation and switching station construction projects in accordance with Company practices while meeting appropriate performance standards. This will require the use of engineering disciplines and practices.
  • Prepare budgetary cost estimates and Work Authorizations to obtain financial approval for assigned projects.
  • Initiate requests for project material and contract labor and perform technical evaluations of the resulting vendor/contractor bids and designs.
  • Coordinate the construction of assigned projects through the use of scheduling, material requisition, and construction meetings such that the overall project objectives are met.
  • Communicate, coordinate, and interface with other areas of the Company and with others external to the Company to assure that designs and construction practices are appropriate.
  • Effectively communicates and resolves minor issues with other workgroups while presenting detailed documentation and plans ranging from basic to slightly complex design.
  • Provide design solutions and engineering designs as requested to resolve substation and switching station performance problems.
  • Provide technical assistance to Transmission operations and maintenance organizations of Oncor.
  • Provide resource engineer support to contractor engineering firms for station projects.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on station design topics.

Additional responsibility for Senior level includes, but is not limited to, representing Transmission Engineering on internal technical committees.

  • Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.

  • Must be flexible, have organizational skills, and multi-tasking skills to handle large volumes of work. This requires setting priorities and designing multiple projects without having full project requirements known.
  • Must possess multi functionality skills to influence changes and effectively work across disciplines and functions to achieve common goals and company business purposes.
  • Capable of working with people of divergent back grounds.
  • Familiarity and/or proficiency in the use of Transmission Engineering specific computer applications.
  • Working subject and/or advanced knowledge, leadership, and design experience to provide engineering design and coordination services for system wide transmission station projects.
  • Must have familiarity and/or is technically strong with transmission system to provide technical support to the field organizations and to support the field organization in restoring service outages caused by equipment failures, weather, miss-operations, and human errors.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Civil, and/or Mechanical Engineering required.

Staff Engineer

  • 4+ years of relevant engineering experience required.

Senior Engineer

  • 6+ years of relevant engineering experience required.
  • Applicants with a Professional Engineer license in any state encouraged to apply.

Measure of Success:

  • Technical issues are timely and effectively resolved, documented, and communicated.
  • On time, within budget project completion.
  • Learn and utilize personal computer-based engineering design, communication, scheduling, estimating, and word processing computer programs within Oncor such as Microsoft Office products.
  • Utilize mainframe computer-based material processing and accounting systems within Oncor.
