Oncor (together with its subsidiaries) operates the largest transmission and distribution system in Texas, delivering power to nearly 4 million homes and businesses and operating more than 145,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines in Texas.
Position Summary
As an Engineer within our Transmission Planning team at Oncor, you'll perform engineering studies of Oncor's transmission system in the areas of dynamic stability, steady-state power flow, electromagnetic transients (EMT), small signal stability, and other technical studies essential for the reliable and optimized operation of the Oncor transmission system. This role is also critical in the development of transmission plans and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Regional Planning Group submittals, ensuring compliance with North America Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and ERCOT requirements.
This role will leverage knowledge in electrical transmission planning and the application of advanced grid technologies to assess grid performance and prepare the system for future challenges, including load growth, plant retirements, and renewable integration.
This is a hybrid position, with 3 office days minimum, based in our 777 Main St - Fort Worth location. We are considering applicants with multiple experience levels and skills. Please review the "education & experience" section for more details regarding each level.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct studies in support of Oncor's system reliability, including steady-state, transient stability, transfer capability, short circuit, and EMT analyses.
  • Provide technical support to various teams through detailed studies, comprehensive reports, and active participation in relevant meetings.
  • Collaborate with other departments to identify project needs, optimize system reliability, and address transmission system deficiencies.
  • Develop and maintain accurate dynamic stability models within our transmission network, including models for load, undervoltage and underfrequency load shedding schemes, and dynamic reactive devices.
  • Contribute to our efforts to comply with NERC and ERCOT's Geomagnetic Disturbance standards and requirements, ensuring the system is prepared for and resilient against geomagnetic events.
  • Contribute to the development of transmission plans and ERCOT Regional Planning Group submittals, supporting the reliable and optimized operation of the transmission system.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC, Federal Energy Reliability Council (FERC), and ERCOT requirements by creating, maintaining, and managing supporting evidence for NERC standards.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with industry colleagues such as peer utility staff, ERCOT staff, and other stakeholders to effectively resolve issues of common need and interest.
  • Actively participate in ERCOT and NERC working groups and task forces, contributing expertise to guide industry practices and ensure Oncor's compliance with relevant standards.
  • Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.

Education Requirement:
  • Bachelor of Science or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field required.

Experience Requirement(s):
  • Applicants with Familiarity with the Oncor transmission system and with ERCOT practices associated with ERCOT transmission planning, operation, and modeling including the ERCOT Planning Guide, Operating Guides, and Protocols encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants with Familiarity with Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSSE), ASPEN, Power Systems Computer-aided Design (PSCAD), and Python tools encouraged to apply.

Levels of Experience for Consideration:
  • Engineer: Minimum two (2) years of electrical utility experience in engineering, planning, operations or operations support role.
  • Staff Engineer: Minimum four (4) years of electrical utility experience in engineering, planning, operations or operations support role.
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum six (6) years of electrical utility experience in engineering, planning, operations or operations support role.

Measure of Success:
  • Timely identification and resolution of potential stability issues within the Oncor system, including endorsement by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Oncor Transmission Planning philosophy and procedures developed in compliance with all NERC and ERCOT requirements.
  • Represent our team through internal and external working groups.
  • Improved planning efficiency from analysis of the transmission system through new/improved advanced tools.
  • Demonstrated initiative in supporting the team by taking on reach projects, providing training, and other tasks as needed.
