Job description

Engineer Associate Through Sr Engineer – Transmission Planning Generation Interconnection

This position's primary function is to perform activities associated with generator interconnect requests. This position offers a challenging and rewarding career growth opportunity for a motivated engineer interested in increasing their breadth of understanding of Oncor's transmission business as it relates to transmission planning, grid operations, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) wholesale power market. Ideal candidates possess the ability to approach new problems logically, and are highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects, supporting several clients.

This is a hybrid position, with 3 office days minimum, based in our 777 Main St – Fort Worth location. We are considering applicants with multiple experience levels and skills. Please review the "education & experience" section for more details regarding each level.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Perform steady state load flow studies to determine transmission system improvements necessary to connect and provide adequate transmission access to proposed generators to Oncor's transmission system.
  • Facilitate the work flow for the transmission planning component of generator interconnect requests, including tracking each project's status
  • Provide technical support and prepare/review technical study reports of various aspects of the ERCOT generation Full Interconnection Studies, including Steady State, Voltage ride-though, Transient Stability, and System Service Representative (SSR) studies.
  • Interface with, and support Oncor Transmission Service Consultants to ensure the timely completion of generator interconnects studies.
  • Collaborate with internal personnel, external consultants, and Interconnecting Entities (generator developers) to ensure Oncor and ERCOT required performance criteria are met.
  • Translate Oncor processes and compliance requirements into clear written procedures
  • Maintains a current knowledge of all electric utility rules, technical, administrative and regulatory requirements for reliable, safe operation of the Oncor Electric Delivery transmission system.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable North America Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and ERCOT standards and protocols.
  • Represent Oncor in industry organizations

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are needed to work with ERCOT, consultants, contractors, and Oncor internal personnel.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, in Electrical Engineering or related field is required.

Experience:

Associate Engineer:

  • 0-2 years of the experience in the electric utility industry is required
  • Applicants with power flow modeling and transmission system planning experience using Power System Stabilizer (PSS)/Purchasing Selling Entity (PSE) or PowerWorld are encouraged to apply.
  • Capable in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity of the Oncor Transmission system.

Engineer:

  • 2 years of the experience in the electric utility industry is required.
  • Applicants with experience in project management, design, operation and planning of transmission and/or distribution facilities are encouraged to apply.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity and basic understanding of programming languages preferably Python.

Staff Engineer:

  • 4 years of the experience in the electric utility industry is required.
  • Utilize programming languages to automate processes.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint with ability to use VBA in Excel.

Senior Engineer:

  • 6 years of the experience in the electric utility industry is required.
  • Applicants that are License as a Professional Engineer in Texas are encouraged to apply.
  • Working knowledge of the Oncor Transmission system with familiarity of general operational performance characteristics.
  • Working knowledge of ERCOT practices associated with ERCOT transmission modeling and power flow assessment, including the ERCOT Planning Guide and ERCOT Protocols.
  • Capable of performing shift factor analysis.

  • Demonstrate ownership of projects and high level of knowledge in multiple relevant areas of focus within Oncor.
  • Ability to work independently and on a team. As well as working with people of divergent backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of electric Transmission or Distribution infrastructure preferred.
  • Must be flexible and have organizational skills to handle diverse types of work.
  • Must effectively work across disciplines and functions to achieve common goals and company business purposes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex subject matter to vendors and Oncor Electric Delivery employees.
